Why Caribbean stories? 🌴

Our founder Sefanja said it best — he grew up on stories around the campfire, from his grandma, at family night. But on screen and on stage? He never saw a space where Caribbean stories existed. Not the struggle, not the beauty, not the majesty of what our lives can be.

So that’s what Maroon Isle does. We tell the stories of the historically disenfranchised — Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic, St Lucia, Barbados, Suriname, Guyana and more— and we’re building a future where we all sit together and tell our stories together.

What does “maroon isle” actually mean? 🌴

Our founder Sefanja breaks it down — the name comes from the maroons of suriname, descendants of africans who refused to be enslaved and built free communities of their own in the amazon. That’s exactly what maroon isle productions is: a free space to tell our ancestors’ stories and dream up new ones about our future.
