In 1957, the respected BBC news program Panorama convinced a large part of Britain that spaghetti grew on trees. 🍝

On April 1st, the show aired a three-minute segment presented by a very well-known broadcaster, Richard Dimbleby.

It showed a family in the Ticino region of Switzerland, near the Italian border, supposedly harvesting their yearly spaghetti crop.

Viewers watched as women carefully pulled long strands of pasta from tree branches and laid them out in the sun to dry.

Dimbleby's serious narration explained that a very mild winter and the elimination of the dreaded "spaghetti weevil" had resulted in an exceptionally bountiful harvest.

At the time, spaghetti was not a common food in the UK and was considered by many to be an exotic delicacy. Most people didn't know how it was made.

Hundreds of viewers actually called the BBC television network the next day to ask how they could grow their own spaghetti trees.

The operators at BBC were told to give a very specific, straight-faced response: "Place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best." 🌳

The segment is now remembered as one of the most famous and successful April Fools' Day pranks of all time.
