Here’s the thing: I didn’t really know what the hell I was doing in Havana 2015.
I loved Cuban music, always enjoyed playing it, and I went down to Havana during a time when I was looking for a fresh idea. I though maybe “Beethoven Mambo” would be a cool idea as a theme project.
Then I heard Timba music.
And it changed my life.
This is how I think of Timba: If Salsa is the beautiful date, Timba is the great s*x that you have after the date.
It’s everything that’s happened in Cuban music over the 500 years of it’s history, all set on fire with funk as the fuel. It’s intense and it’s going to last forever. And it’s a genre of music that’s just getting started.
So I figured I’d devote myself to learning Timba. I stumbled through it with this arrangement in 2016, and that led to everything that’s happened in the last 10 years. And I’m just getting started as well.
See you soon, amigos.
