LBA is located just South of Buffalo NY, USA. Owned by Lightning Boy Audio, LBA Recording Studio is a professional Production, Recording and Mixing studio located in the greater Buffalo, NY area. Just a short drive South of the city, in the quiet rural village of North Collins is one of the most original studios Western New York has to offer. Practically everything at the studio has been designed

and hand-crafted by its founder, Mike Congilosi II. Everything from the recording equipment to the very walls that shape the sound have all been created with one goal in mind... to make big & warm sounding records! While LBA Recording Studio primarily provides music production services, the studio also serves as a real-world test bed for Lightning Boy Audio products and prototypes. Most pieces of equipment at the studio are hand-made by Mike. That, combined with his production approach, gives LBA Studios its own distinct sound. The results of this combination are that of warm, highly detailed sounding recordings with a wide stereo image and a deeply beautiful tone. The musicians, the instruments, the rooms you're recording in, the recording engineer, the microphones, the mic preamps, and then all the other gear and software. Room acoustics are no joke. I'm always interested in making upgrades to the rooms whenever I find a sonic flaw and when finances permit. It can get very expensive!

I tried the new ADK Z² 251 tube condenser microphone on several sources. I didn't like it on electric guitar cab or bass cab. It's definitely classy sounding on vocals. There's an elegant sort of gentle smoothness to the sound, while also being very detailed. It's sort of like silk. I didn't find it to "fix" sibilance, but it did manage to make sibilance tolerable. Compared to my other pricey mics, this mic fit the best on Vanessa's voice over a jazz tune. I'm not sure if it's worth the high price tag. I definitely feel its a bit over-priced, but I plan to keep this mic. I did manage to get it on sale.

Well... I didn't think I'd be recording Jim Jacka from the Shredd and Ragan Show on 97 Rock today (Buffalo, NY radio talk show)! I listen to that show in the mornings. It sort of blew my mind. It was a big elaborate recording session of 7 voice actors for an anthology horror audio drama series. Audio special FX and all. Tomorrow is the follow up session where we're recording singers and FX. The story surrounds a female Jazz singer. Lots of fun! You'll want to keep an eye out for "The Unfinished" on Spotify and/or where ever you listen to podcasts.

This nearly $4k investment is getting tested out today and tomorrow on a female Jazz singer. This is the ADK Z² 251, a re-imagining of the legendary Telefunken ELA M 251 by renowned microphone designer, David Bock. I have been hunting for a high quality microphone that gives overly sibilant female voices a polished, professional sound with little to no EQ. The Mohave Audio MA-37 didn't do it for me. I will report back after this weekend.

I recently ran into a couple similar situations with recording female voices that are naturally sibilant. Maybe a bit of a lisp. I have ribbon mics that could probably deal with that well, but they'll require a lot of EQ to get it sounding modern and polished. I've been looking for a microphone that can deliver the goods without much if any EQ. I tried this Mohave Audio MA-37 ($3849 USD) and was very disappointed. It sounded like a slightly more detailed ribbon mic. It needed a ton of EQ. It was definitely an odd mic. For that price I'm not interested. I returned it and got my money back. The search is still on. The ADK 251 was suggested as a solid option for me. Still thinking about that one. I'd like to stay under $4K. Anyone (with experience) have any serious suggestions? Thank you.
