The story behind this piece makes the award even more special. This tattoo was originally created 3 years ago at the NY Empire Tattoo Convention, NY EMPIRE STATE TATTOO EXPO where Sanel entered it in the Best of Day — Friday contest.

Three years later, seeing this tattoo still holding its color, contrast, saturation, and detail—and now receiving recognition as a best healed color tattoo—is a true testament to the importance of technique and proper ex*****on.

A tattoo isn’t finished when you leave the studio. The real test is how it heals and ages over time. What started as a surrealistic design created by Devin took on a whole new life through the collaboration of two artists, two styles, and two generations of technique.
Devin — the ex-apprentice. Devin Mullen 
Sanel — the mentor. Sanel Valles - New Jersey Tattoo Artist
Together, they pushed the design, twisted it, challenged each other, and experimented with color to develop and improve a technique that transformed this concept into a full leg piece of art. 🎨🖤
This wasn’t simply a tattoo collaboration — it was a fusion of styles, experience, experimentation, and trust. Watching an apprentice and mentor evolve together and bring their own language into the same piece is what makes tattooing such an incredible art form.
