Thanks to everyone who came out to the Edmonds Jazz Walk last Saturday! We couldn't do it without you—really.

JazzClubsNW is a nonprofit focused on producing outstanding jazz education and performance opportunities in the communities we serve. We love hosting jazz walks, and they serve a really important function in our model. They're fundraisers that help sustain our year-round programming.

Have you ever wondered how how the pros who play at JazzClubsNW performances and coach students at jams get paid? These community events are a big piece of the puzzle. We're grateful for every person who attends, every venue that donates space, every volunteer who spends their evening with us, and every musician who takes the stage. THANK YOU for keeping jazz alive and well in our communities!

If you weren't able to make it to the Edmonds Jazz Walk but want to support our work, consider making a one time donation or becoming a sustaining member at the links below. Students join free!

Studies by Harvard Medicine show that "Active music-making truly engages your entire brain. This creates the most potential for [healthy] distraction, pain reduction, cognition, fine and gross motor development, and expression." These positive impacts of music performance and listening on mental health are a powerful reminder of the importance of live music in our communities this May, as we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month.

Jazz music has an especially rich history as a form of expression and cultural connection. "Through music, individuals can express their unique experiences, struggles, and triumphs, forging connections with others who share similar backgrounds. Research has shown that exposure to diverse musical genres and artists can broaden perspectives, challenge stereotypes, and foster empathy among listeners" (American Psychiatric Association). Here at JazzClubsNW, we strive to create an environment where we can support the growth of our student participants as both musicians and individuals. But music isn't just beneficial to teens! The University of Florida's study on music and emotional intelligence suggests that, "Listening to music and playing an instrument can improve emotional intelligence scores in both adolescents and adults." We're proud to present opportunities for people of all ages to be active members of the music scene. Whatever your background, we hope you take this opportunity connect, listen, and pursue local music within your community. Be well, and keep making music!

Danny Kolke is a jazz pianist, composer, arranger, educator, and the founder of Boxley's and JazzClubsNW.

How did this all begin? Danny used to tell folks, "Someday, I'll sell my company and open up a jazz club." For years, he kept saying that until a friend asked him, "What if you never sell your company?" That was the catalyst. Instead of waiting for the right moment, Danny bought a restaurant, moved his grand piano in, and started a jazz club in North Bend, Washington. "I called my friend Greg, and he started booking bands, and he saved a night for me to play, and we were off and running."

The magic happened as the community came together. School groups and students wanted to play, and professional musicians were hired to work with them. Boxley's evolved into a hub for the community to gather around live music. "Communities don't have a lot of opportunities to experience live music in a recurring environment," Danny says. "Boxley's began to fill a void. Other communities wanted the same thing, and that has grown into JazzClubsNW."

Danny believes jazz serves two functions: entertainment and educating the next generation. Jazz is a creative art form fueled by precision, making work with students and musicians deeply fulfilling. "It's not an art form that a lot of people appreciate in a recorded format; it is best experienced live, to see the musicians interacting, to see the audience interacting."

While JazzClubsNW started as a single venue in downtown North Bend, it has expanded to support jazz in other communities. Places like Boxley's are "not unique, but rare." JazzClubsNW has helped other communities develop their own nonprofits, creating a network of support. "It's the people in it that make it great, the pros who are willing to do it, the students who show up, the community who goes to see shows. You put that all together, that is what should exist everywhere."

From volunteers and students to pros and community members, each person is crucial to making the organization what it is today.

Thank you, Danny. Your dedication in pursuing your dream inspires us all.
