In 1973, Cecilia Vicuña was in her mid-twenties studying in London when military officer Augusto Pinochet led a violent coup against her country’s democratically elected president, Salvador Allende.

Unable to return to Chile, Vicuña sought asylum in England and eventually landed in New York in 1980, where she continues to live and work today.

In this remarkable self-portrait from Vicuña’s early years of exile, the artist is intertwined with her namesake—the wild camelid indigenous to her mountainous homeland. The celebratory scenes on her flowing pink cape contrast with the somber images she is drawing as she envisions the growing horrors of Pinochet’s dictatorship.

See this work on view in our exhibition "Tha Sun Will Set: Contemporary Abstraction and the Body."
