Don't miss your chance to meet our Guest Artists, Jessilyn Dearborn and Yvon Kennon, at our June opening reception at Gallery North, this Friday, June 5th 5-7pm!

Jessilyn Dearborn and Yvon Kennon will be showing their work at Gallery North, 9 Eagle Street, North Adams, MA. The exhibit will accompany new work by permanent gallery artists Marilyn Cavallari, Barbara Patton, and Carol Shumans from June 3 to June 27, 2026. Artists will attend an opening reception Friday, June 5th from 5-7pm.

Jessilyn Dearborn is a mixed media artist creating work that exists somewhere between 2D and 3D. Her work is inspired by texture, nature, art history, and children’s book illustration. Her process involves finding colors and textures in nature to paint on paper that will be used in future pieces. While her primary medium is cut paper, she also enjoys sculpting with clay. Jessilyn holds a BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and lives in Adams, MA.

Yvon Kennon creates functional wares by hand. These are then fired in a kiln stoked with wood, a process that takes many hands over many days. At the end of this journey, these pieces find their way into new hands, encouraging day to day moments of quiet reflection on the beauty of human-made utilitarian objects. In a busy, overstimulated world, she strives to create minimalist pieces that play with the tension between the deliberate act of creation and the unexpected spontaneity that results from the wood firing process.

Come see the exquisite ceramics of Yvon Kennon at Gallery North as part of First Friday North Adams, June 5th from 5-7pm.

Pottery is one of the oldest human inventions. As humans we use it, break it, and make it in ways that extend back thousands of years.

Yvon creates functional wares by hand. These are then fired in a kiln stoked with wood, a process that takes many hands over many days. At the end of this journey, these pieces find their way into new hands, encouraging day to day moments of quiet reflection on the beauty of human-made utilitarian objects.
In a busy, overstimulated world, she strives to create minimalist pieces that play with the tension between the deliberate act of creation and the unexpected spontaneity that results from the wood firing process. Having the good fortune to have lived in various countries and being exposed to their rich ceramics histories, Yvon finds herself returning to the deceptive simplicity of Japanese pottery for inspiration in this journey. Her work embodies repeating themes as each piece moves through her hands, to the kiln, and out into the world as a reminder of the complexity and commonality of the human experience.

In making functional pottery, Yvon considers herself a link in a chain of potters, which stretches across the world, back into history, and reaching forward into the future.

This is the last week to see the work of one of our first Gallery Artists, Sean McCusker, at Gallery North. He has been with us for two years and needs to move on to different areas. Don't miss your last chance to see his work at the gallery with the last viewing on Saturday, May 30th, 2026.

Sean McCusker creates mysterious landscapes filled with light and color. His work inspires hope as the characters, surrounded by a dark world, seek the light just over the horizon.

Guest Artist Sarah Sutro gave a book reading at Gallery North last Wednesday, May 13th, to a packed crowd. If you missed the talk, her books are still available at the gallery as well as her artwork on display until the end of May.

Sarah Sutro’s work expresses patterns and rhythms of the natural world, especially the vast expanses of river she experienced living in Thailand and Bangladesh, and ocean inlets and marshes on US East and West coasts. Her acrylic and watercolor landscape paintings at Gallery North are filled with abstract marks and washes of color vividly representing nature. Bands of paint shimmer and overlap, suggesting movement and light on water. Passages of color contrast and dissolve into the atmosphere of late day sunlight and heat.

Sutro’s work has been shown and is in collections nationally and internationally. She has had residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Ossabaw Island Foundation, Millay Colony for the Arts, Blue Mountain Center, American Academy of Rome, Art Dulcinium (Montenegro) and the Goetemann residency in Rocky Neck, Gloucester. In 2009 she took part in a water residency at Blue Mountain, where artists, writers and filmmakers came together to share their work and discuss the issue of water conservancy and environmental awareness. She is a recipient of Po***ck Krasner, Mass Cultural Council, and Taconic Foundation grants, and been a faculty at colleges and universities in the area, including Emerson College, AIB at Lesley University, Mass College of Art and Design, Union Institute and University and UMass Boston.

This Wednesday, May 13th, Gallery North will be hosting a talk by Sarah Sutro at 6pm. Sarah is also our guest artist for the month of May, so be sure to come see her works of art and literature.

As well as poems touching on color, she will read from her book of essays, COLORS: Passages through Art, Asia and Nature, about the making of natural inks from plants in Asia. This is a free event hosted at Gallery North, 9 Eagle Street, North Adams, MA.
