DOUBLE RED FOX 🦊

We are pleased to welcome Caleb and Inari the red foxes to the EPZ family! Their large ears are so powerful they can hear sounds miles away and use that amazing skill to hunt their prey.

A Clean bill of health and ready for breeding ✅

Our male tamandua, Chuck, recently had a routine pre-breeding exam, during which our staff confirmed that he is ready to proceed with his breeding recommendation. With this positive health update, we now look forward to proceeding with his introduction to Tammy, our female. We are excited for this positive progress. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting journey!

She’s pretty cute, but her friend-shaped features have a purpose 🐱

Ocelots have many features that humans may find cute (large forward-facing eyes and rounded ears, to name a few) that serve adaptive purposes for survival! Their ears, for example, help sound travel easily, allowing them to track prey.

A huge fact about a tiny resident. 🦔

Meet Davis, our new tenrec! He may look like a hedgehog, but is actually more closely related to elephants and manatees. Hedgehogs aren’t even related! Evolutionary trees are complicated; this video is just a leaf in the giant tree.

Davis joined us to pair with Edith, our female tenrec, as part of the AZA ambassador breeding program. Over 60% of tenrecs in the AZA are ambassadors, so Davis and Edith are a special pair, both new to each other and to the breeding program. They’re off to a great start!

Davis is under a year old and still learning. His team is training him to leave his enclosure and feel comfortable in new spaces. Look for him at Wild Encounters and around the Zoo soon.

A special thank you to KeyBank, the presenting sponsor of this year's Wine Safari! 🍷 🐆 elmwoodparkzoo.org/events/wine-safari/

We're also proud to congratulate Youseff Tannous, Eastern Pennsylvania Market President & Retail Leader at KeyBank, on being named to the Philadelphia Business Journal's 40 Under 40. His leadership, community focus, and commitment to making a difference make this recognition well deserved.

From sponsoring our Zoo On Wheels vehicle and bringing wildlife education into communities across the region to supporting guest favorites like the Christmas Cows at Wild Lights and the Ice Slide at Winterfest, KeyBank's partnership helps make our mission possible.

Congratulations, Youseff, and thank you, KeyBank, for helping inspire the next generation of wildlife and conservation champions!

The grumpiest cat you ever did see.

Meet our newest species: the Pallas’s cat (also called the manul)! These elusive felines are famous for their “grumpy” faces and thick coats, both likely adaptations to cold environments. Their skull shape gives them small foreheads and high-set eyes, which may help them hunt while lying flat as snow builds up around them.

These new friends are not on exhibit yet, but will be soon. Stay tuned!
