What an incredible opportunity to be able to visit this gorgeous Basilica in Milwaukee, WI. Easily one of my top favorite churches in America and highly recommend visiting if you are in the area.
I could spend a lifetime in this church and never fully uncover every detail and symbolism that exists within these walls. As soon as I entered the doorway into this Basilica, my eyes were flooded with beauty that I couldn't stop looking around to soak it all in or as my wife says, "Overwhelmed by Beauty." This is, in my mind, how churches ought to be built. Every square inch covered in beauty to express some aspect of God who is Beauty itself. In just the same way that I could spend a lifetime studying this church and never fully comprehending the details, we could spend a lifetime in a relationship with the One who Created us and never fully understand His ways. The church is after the House of God, therefore, the walls ought to express the richness and beauty of God as much as it is humanly possible. Our ancestors understood this and unfortunately in the age of modernity, our churches opt for bare walls and bland images that doesn't allow us to gaze and wonder but rather depresses us into boredom. Every inch of these walls is an opportunity for me to dive deeper into prayer even if I were to be distracted during Holy Mass. We need to become a culture that appreciates beauty, that loves beautiful things and doesn't shy away from the richness that we are capable of crafting for God.
Fortunately, with our younger generation, it does appear that we are slowly moving back to that appreciation for craft and beautiful churches. I pray and hope for the restoration of this level of craftsmanship and beauty in our parishes.
