Much to celebrate in Native art in 2025!

Reflecting on all of the amazing Indigenous art happenings and exhibitions in 2025 has been a balm to the soul in a year filled with challenges. Despite efforts to crush free expression, Native artists, curators, tribes, and art advocates have pushed forward with inspiring projects.

Here is a selection of incredible events that the FAAM team selected through anonymous voting.

We’d love to hear your favorites for the year (feel free to share in the comments)!

My portrait of Mary Golda Ross (Cherokee Nation, 1908–2008) posted by the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian.

Fun fact: Staci Golar was the body model for this painting!

Mary Golda Ross (Cherokee Nation) was a pioneering aerospace engineer and the only woman on the original team at the legendary Lockheed Skunk Works. Discover her story: s.si.edu/3QFfppU

Looking for something fun to do?
Join America Meredith at Amerind this Saturday, November 22nd
for a Free Artist Talk and Art Making Workshop.

America will be giving an Artist Talk at Amerind on Saturday, November 22, from 11 am -12 pm followed by a FREE Spoke Card making workshop from 1-4 pm. America will hold her workshop in the gallery with her exhibition. The public is welcome to drop in, create art, and visit with the artist. Art materials (paper, colored pencils, pens, etc) will be provided to participating visitors.

America was a bike messenger in San Fransico while she was a student at the San Francisco Art Institute. During this time, she began producing zines and spoke cards, which she traded with her fellow bike messengers. The spoke cards also became part of a Cherokee Language project in which she would translate and research words into the Cherokee language combining with an illustration. She also created hanging cards as a nondestructive way to tag or message in public places. Examples of her cards can be seen in her Amerind exhibit.

America Meredith's exhibit will be leaving soon, come and see it before it sails off! You can count yourself lucky to see an occasional work by artist America Meredith, the busy, award-winning editor and publisher of First American Art Magazine. Amerind has been fortunate to have a mid-career retrospective featuring many of her works this past year. We invite you to come and check it out before it's gone. The last day to see the exhibit will be Sunday, November 30th.

We hope that you will come out and meet America, see the show, and have fun creating your own cards with America for a fun day at Amerind.

This Artist Talk & Workshop will be FREE and open to all ages.
