Only two more days until Exhale’s 9th annual recital, Sonder!
Dear Exhale Family,
This season, my production piece is inspired by the concept of "Sonder"—the realization that every passerby lives a life as vivid and complex as your own.
The choreography begins with a powerful reminder: "You are the main character. The protagonist. The star at the center of your unfolding story." I want to encourage all my students—past, present, and future—to remember that you have only one life to live. Allow yourself to take up space, be seen, and let your light shine bright.
The piece continues: "You are surrounded by your supporting cast. Friends and family hanging in your immediate orbit... There in the background, faint and out of focus, are the extras. Each living a life as vivid and complex as your own."
This serves as an imperative reminder that our decisions, big or small, affect everyone in our orbit. A simple smile can change a stranger’s entire day. Choosing to react to difficult situations with kindness and grace builds trust and a community that shows up for one another.
I was reminded of this while watching my oldest daughters skip rocks in the ocean this past summer. Just as those rocks cast ripples further than the eye can see, our actions and words are felt far beyond our immediate circles. It is also a reminder to be mindful of whom you allow into your inner orbit. We have only one life, and we should protect our peace from those whose "ripples" might disrupt it.
May we all find solace and peace in these uncertain times. I hope we continue to create meaningful art that explores abstract topics, such as Sonder, and leaves the world better than we found it.
With purpose,
Mrs. Jen
