What a wonderful day of community! 🌱

A huge thank you to Community Farmers and 757 Creative ReUse Center for such a great Back to Our Roots event! It was amazing to see the turnout, with so many folks getting their hands dirty and helping bring a new community garden to life in Norfolk!

We were so grateful to have had the opportunity to teach a class on at-home and had such a wonderful time talking to folks about second chances for food scraps, cardboard, and everyday habits. We even sent nearly 10 lbs of cardboard home with folks to be put to good use! 📦

It was also great seeing our friends from Coastal Castings, LLC 🪱 and talking about and and getting to meet some of the wonderful folks from Elizabeth River Project as well!

Thank you to everyone who showed up for our community and spent their morning making this such a special day!🪷

Hey Folks!

We’ve received so many questions about donations, that I realized I didn’t give y’all enough information yesterday, so here’s some answers to some FAQs.

What’s the address?
4210 Colley Avenue, Unit B, Norfolk, VA 23508

Where should I park?
Our main entrance is at the rear of the building. There is a gravel lot behind the building that you can access from 42nd street. Our unit is at the north end of the building. Please do not park in front of the dumpster.

What kinds of donations do you accept?
See link in comments to the list of acceptable and unacceptable donations. Additionally if your items have a strong odor of any kind we may not be able to accept them as many members of our staff and the community cannot tolerate artificial scents. There are so many things that exist in this world, and obviously there are some things that are not on either the acceptable or unacceptable list. If you think it’s the right vibe, bring it in and we’ll decide on the spot.

Do I need an appointment?
Yes, at this time you do need an appointment. Link in comments.

Do I have to wait while you unpack my donations?
Yes, but it doesn’t take that long. Our staff are pretty efficient and can get your donations sorted quickly. The more organized your donations are, the less time it will take. We recommend bringing donations in reusable shopping bags. If you have more than one category of stuff, use a different bag for each one. One bag for fabric, one bag for embroidery supplies, etc.

Can I bring my grandmother’s sewing machine that no one has used in 15 years?
Maybe. We will be testing all electronic devices as you bring them in. Please make sure that all sewing machines and sergers have a power cord and a foot pedal. Plug it in at home and make sure it powers up before you bring it to us.

Do you need bags?
Paper bags, yes. Plastic bags, not right now please.

What about the clothes swap and the free food pantry?
We have not set up either of those yet, so please do not bring clothes or food yet, we’ll let y’all know when it’s time.

Thanks y'all!

Now Accepting Donations!

Hi Friends! We’re so happy to announce that we’re ready to start accepting donations at our new location! It’s finally time to bring all the stuff you’ve been setting aside for us for the past few months. Donation appointments are now available from Wednesday, August 26th through Sunday, August 30th. Please click here to schedule your appointment (https://book.squareup.com/appointments/g6txt7dzkt1b6x/location/LT3E2P7256J4T/services) . Park in the lot behind the building, accessible from 42nd street, our main entrance is at the rear of the building. We’ll have some carts outside if it isn’t raining. If you need assistance unloading your car, just pop in and ask for help. Please note that we are not open for shopping quite yet, we’re only accepting donations at this time. Next week we’ll reassess the situation and determine what comes next. Thank you all so much for your patience this summer. It’s been a wild ride getting set up in our third (and hopefully final) home. The North Colley neighborhood is absolutely fantastic. When you’re here to drop off donations, take some time to stroll up and down the street and get to know the area. There are several places to grab a coffee, lunch or a beer. We’re so excited to see y’all soon.

Back To Our Roots

We’re very excited to announce that we’ve partnered with the Elizabeth River Project and Community Farmers to install a community garden at our new location. Please join us on Sunday, August 30th for some workshops about composting and vermiculture, enjoy some refreshments and help us plant our fall vegetable garden. Free and open to the public. Whether you’re a lifelong gardener or have only grown houseplants, this event is for you. Experienced gardeners will be sharing knowledge and skills with those who are just getting started. We’re excited to grow food to share with our community. Vegetable starts have been generously donated by Eggleston Garden Center. Please note that this is an outdoor gardening event, we are not yet open for shopping.

This is the view from our shop y'all. It's so pretty here. Can't wait to share it with y'all.
It took four of the biggest moving trucks I've ever seen to get our stuff in, but it's here! Now we just have to figure out where it all goes! Can't wait to see you. ...
