Individual Artists Support Grant applications are now open. Learn more and apply at VirginiaBeach.gov/ArtsGrants. Deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16.

Individual Artists Support Grants are designed to support Virginia Beach artists by offering resources to enhance their artistic practice, achieve professional growth, build their portfolios, and engage with the community to contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Virginia Beach. Artists must be Virginia Beach residents to apply.

You're invited to join us this Thursday, 10/15, 6-8pm at the historic Attucks Theatre for a celebration of 20yrs of the Norfolk Public Art program! Free & open to the public.

This featured public art project "Garden of Dreams" is located just a block away from the theatre along Church St. and was created by local artist Clayton Singleton Fine Art and Teens With a Purpose during the summer of 2016.

Registration is open! High School students who love to sing are invited to audition for the Young Singers Project and sing with Norfolk Arts grantee, The Virginia Chorale!

Auditions will be held Monday, November 9 at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, and Tuesday, November 10, 2026 at Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center Batten University in Virginia Beach.

High School students who love to sing- here's your opportunity to sing with the pros of the Virginia Chorale! Auditions for our Young Singers Project will take place on Nov. 9 & 10. Register here: https://www.vachorale.org/yspauditions.html

You'll experience life as a professional choral singer from the intensive (and fun!) rehearsal process with the Chorale singers to two final concerts in January. You'll sing alongside other high school students who love to learn and perform as much as you do. We can't wait to meet you!

📍Munson Park, Gosnold Ave.
"Place in Time", is a free-standing sculpture representing generations and the changing dynamics within the Park Place community. A center tree containing elm tree-shaped leaves with names of streets in Park Place moves in the wind. At times, the spinning motion forms the shape of a heart. Three time capsules are encased in the base to enable ongoing community engagement creating a vehicle for timeless interaction while promoting creative thought and community tradition.

Three figures surrounding the tree signify the roots of Park Place; the past, present and future generations. Each figure has a specific map engraved on the surface; the largest showing a hand-drawn 1918 map of Park Place and Munson Park, the medium displaying a modern-day map, and the smallest showing a simplified unlabeled map representing the future. The sculpture is made of powder coated steel, aluminum and brass installed on a circular concrete pad.

Created in 2010 for the Virginia Zoo located at 350 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23504.

As visitors approach the main entrance of the Virginia Zoo they are greeted by a massive life-size African elephant with its trunk inquisitively raised.

Matthew Gray Palmer of Friday Harbor, Washington playfully illustrates our interconnection with each other by incorporating one of the largest terrestrial mammals, with one of the most delicate wind-bound insects, the butterfly. The sculpture is fabricated in aluminum and measures approximately 16' long, 7' wide, with a 10' shoulder height. An elegant linear armature that loosely follows the organic volume of the elephant has been welded and forged to provide structural stability.

Spanning the spaces of the armature are over 6,000 buttertly silhouettes plasma-arc cut trom sheets in thicknesses ranging from 1/8"-3/16" then hand forged and shaped to complete the surtace. A large (18" wing span) golden butterfly with elephant wings is cast in aluminum and gilded with 24k gold and rests on the elephants spout.

Complimentary to the educational and conservation initiatives of the Virginia Zoo, the artwork aims to illustrate in a playful fashion our interconnection with all that is. The Greek word for butterfly is Psyche and it is the same word for soul. This transformative symbol entwined with the elephant, a symbol of wisdom, evokes the link between knowledge, understanding and compassion as we strive to develop relationships in accord with the world in which we live. Highlighting our diversity as well as our commonalities, from the largest terrestrial animal to delicate wind bound insects, there is recognition that what we do to each other, our planet and its diverse ecology, we do to ourselves.
