From sight reading and classical training to chords and the number system, there’s so much to discover! My name is Abigail Ford, and I am passionate about sharing the life-long gift of music with others through piano lessons. I have been playing piano for over a decade and have been diversely trained to play classical, contemporary (using chords and the Nashville number system), Latin American, an

d other international styles of music. I currently play piano and the synthesizer (Jupiter-XM) at my church weekly and have been fortunate enough to travel and share the gift of music around the U.S. With piano being one of the few instruments that provides self-accompaniment, the sky is the limit as far as what genres you can learn to play! As a practicing marriage and family therapist, I have a unique perspective on how music can have a profound impact on one's well being in a wholistic way. For example, music has mental benefits such as having been proven to increase IQ, memory, problem-solving skills, and more. It has social benefits, opening up doors to friendships or unique opportunities to play with bands and orchestras. Music can create an avenue for emotional expression where words may not be able to. I could go on about the incredible gifts and experiences playing the piano can bring! I hope to share my diverse background with you whether you find yourself wanting to be classically trained, contemporarily trained, or both! I look forward to partnering with you on your musical journey.

Rhythm becomes advanced when you can see and feel subdivisions at the same time. When your brain understands how each rhythm fits inside the beat, syncopation stops feeling unpredictable and your hands start moving with intention. This kind of rhythmic awareness is what turns technical accuracy into real musical expression.

🎹Dynamics are more than markings on a page — they’re how we shape a musical phrase. In this example, the symbols show a gentle crescendo (gradually getting louder) followed by a decrescendo/diminuendo (gradually getting softer). When students learn to grow and release the sound with intention, the music starts to breathe and feel alive.

🎹Learning to read steps and skips is one of the first skills that helps new pianists feel confident on the staff. A step moves to the very next line or space, while a skip jumps over one. Once students can spot these quickly, reading music becomes smoother and far less intimidating.

Accidentals—sharps, flats, and naturals—show how a note should change on the staff. This chart explains how sharps raise a note, flats lower it, and naturals cancel any previous changes. Understanding these symbols helps students read music with confidence.

🎹 The Three Piano Pedals
-Right Pedal — Sustain or Damper Pedal
Makes the sound ring and blend by lifting all the dampers.
-Middle Pedal
On grands, it’s a sostenuto pedal that holds only selected notes.
On many uprights, it’s a practice pedal that makes everything quieter.
-Left Pedal — Soft Pedal (Una Corda)
Makes the sound softer and more delicate.

🎶 Phrasing = Musical Sentences
Phrasing helps music breathe.
Just like we speak in sentences, musicians play in musical sentences — shaping each line so it feels natural, expressive, and complete.
It’s one of the simplest ways to make any piece sound more musical!

🎹 Slow Practice = Real Progress
Playing slowly gives your brain and fingers time to learn the movement with ease.
When things feel controlled and relaxed at a slow tempo, speed comes naturally later.
Slow first → confident later.

🎹 How to Practice a Tricky Measure
Break it down. Mark the music if it helps you visually focus.
Isolate the hard spot.
Loop it until it feels easy.
Then reconnect it to the music.
Small sections → big progress.
