🚨🖤 TATTOO EDUCATION TIME! LET'S TALK ABOUT WHY YOU NEED TO SIT STILL DURING YOUR TATTOO! 🖤🚨
One thing I really wish more clients understood is just how IMPORTANT it is to stay as still as possible while getting tattooed.
And no, it's not because your tattoo artist is trying to be mean, controlling, or make your life miserable for the next few hours. 😂 There's actually a scientific reason behind it, and your skin can pay the price when you start moving around.
LET ME EDUCATE YOU REAL QUICK! 👇
When you're getting tattooed, your artist is carefully controlling the depth of the needle as it enters your skin. Tattoo ink needs to be deposited into a specific layer of your skin called the DERMIS.
Too shallow? Your ink may not hold properly.
Too deep? You risk something called a TATTOO BLOWOUT, where ink spreads beyond the intended area underneath your skin, leaving blurry lines or a shadow around your tattoo.
Now imagine your artist is pulling a beautiful, clean line, and suddenly you JUMP, JERK, TWITCH, or move your entire body.
WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENS TO THAT NEEDLE?! 😭
The skin moves unexpectedly, potentially changing the angle or depth of the needle while it's actively working. This can cause a whole bunch of unnecessary problems!
⚠️ INK MIGRATION / BLOWOUTS: Sudden movement can increase the risk of ink being deposited deeper than intended. When pigment spreads into surrounding tissue, it can leave blurry, fuzzy-looking areas that may be permanent.
⚠️ EXCESSIVE SKIN TRAUMA: Unexpected movement can cause the needle to catch or injure the skin more than intended, potentially increasing irritation and inflammation.
⚠️ HEAVIER SCABBING & DIFFICULT HEALING: Some light scabbing and peeling are normal during healing. But unnecessary trauma to the skin can contribute to heavier scabbing, delayed healing, and possible ink loss.
⚠️ INCONSISTENT LINES: You want those beautiful, crisp, clean lines? Well, it's pretty difficult to pull a perfect line when your client suddenly decides to do the electric slide in the chair. 😂
⚠️ PATCHY COLOR & SHADING: Constant movement makes consistent application more difficult. This can affect how evenly your tattoo is saturated and how it looks once healed.
And here's another thing people don't realize...
TATTOO ARTISTS ARE WORKING ON LIVING, MOVING SKIN.
We're not drawing on a piece of paper. We're working with needles, different skin textures, different skin thicknesses, and an actual human being who can move at any second.
Our job is to understand proper needle depth, skin tension, hand speed, and technique. Your job as a client is to help us by communicating and remaining as still as reasonably possible.
Now, before somebody gets offended, I UNDERSTAND THAT TATTOOS HURT! 😂
I understand involuntary muscle twitches happen. I understand some areas are extremely sensitive. I understand that sitting in one position for hours can be uncomfortable.
I'm not expecting you to be a damn statue for six hours.
BUT COMMUNICATION IS EVERYTHING!
❤️ Need a break? Tell me.
❤️ Need to adjust your position? Tell me BEFORE moving.
❤️ Feel like you're about to sneeze or cough? Give me a heads-up if you can.
❤️ Getting overwhelmed by the pain? We can stop for a minute.
❤️ Know you have involuntary movements or muscle spasms? Let your artist know so we can plan accordingly.
I'd rather stop tattooing for a minute than have you unexpectedly jump while I'm pulling a line that will be on your body FOREVER.
And remember, not every blowout or healing complication is caused by a client moving. Proper technique and needle control are still the artist's responsibility. But unexpected movement absolutely creates additional challenges and risks that we should all be working together to prevent.
A GOOD TATTOO IS A TEAM EFFORT BETWEEN THE ARTIST AND THE CLIENT! 💯
I take my work seriously. I want every single tattoo that walks out of my shop to look just as beautiful healed as it did when it was fresh.
So please, respect the process, communicate with your artist, and understand that when we're asking you to sit still, there's a legitimate reason behind it.
We're not just protecting our artwork. WE'RE PROTECTING YOUR SKIN! 🖤
And please, for the love of tattoos, stop trying to look at your tattoo while I'm actively tattooing it. I promise you'll get to see it when I'm done with that section. 😂😭
