Niagara Falls is a city in Niagara County, New York, straddles the Niagara River, across from the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and named after the famed Niagara Falls which they share. The city is within the Buffalo–Niagara metroplex.

European migration into the area began in the 17th century. The first recorded European to visit the area was Frenchman Robert de la Salle, who built Fort Conti at the mouth of the Niagara River early in 1679, with permission from the Iroquois, as a base for boatbuilding; his ship Le Griffon was built on the upper Niagara River at or near Cayuga Creek.

By the end of the 19th century, the city was heavily industrialized, due in part to the power potential offered by the Niagara River. Tourism was considered a secondary niche, while manufacturing was the main producer of jobs and attracted a large number of workers, many of whom were immigrants. But like so many cities in the rust belt of the United States the outsourcing of manufacturing has led to a decline in population as well as quality of life.

Electricity was the downfall - cheap hydroelectric power - an uber capitalists dream come true. This attracted industry, which provided jobs, which lead to the boom, which lead to the bust. A string of bad gangster b-movie like political grift cases in the early 2000’s and voila, the cycle of American poverty is perpetuated on the backs of people who just can’t leave. The story is repeated in countless towns in the rust belt of the US.

St. Thomas was originally settled around 1500 BC by the Ciboney people. Ciboney sites have been uncovered in Krum Bay. The island was later inhabited by the Arawaks and then the Caribs. Arawak sites have been uncovered in Magen's Bay and Botany Bay, and Carib sites have been uncovered in Magen's Bay and Salt River.

Denmark-Norway’s first attempt to settle the island in 1665 failed. However, the Danes did resettle St. Thomas in 1671, under the sponsorship of the Glueckstadt Co., later the Danish West India Company. The first slave ships arrived in 1673, and St. Thomas became a slave market. In 1685, the Danish leased part of the island to the Brandenburger Company, which was resold to the Danish in 1754, and was granted free port status in 1764.

In 1917, Saint Thomas was purchased (along with Saint Croix and Saint John) by the United States for $25 million in gold as part of a defensive strategy to maintain control over the Caribbean and the Panama Canal during the First World War. The transfer occurred on March 31, 1917, behind Fort Christian before the barracks that now house the Legislature of the U.S Virgin Islands. The baccalaureate service for the transfer was held at the St. Thomas Reformed Church as it was identified as the American church in the Danish West Indies.

It’s an amazingly beautiful place with a complex history. I was able to catch this incredible sunset and the rising of the super moon in just a couple of hours.

Founded by Celts in 7th century BC, the city flourished under Roman rule, evident in its awe-inspiring Aqueduct. Home to an unparalleled mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Moorish architecture, Segovia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Notable landmarks include the majestic Alcázar, inspiration for Disney's Cinderella Castle, and the grand Cathedral of Segovia - a treasure trove of cultural gems in this fairy tale-like ancient city.

The wonderful world of Cabanyal.

In the Poblats Marítims district, the mainly residential neighborhood of El Cabanyal-El Canyamelar backs onto a string of sandy beaches with a palm-lined shorefront promenade. Nearby streets draw summer crowds with souvenir stores, cafes, casual eateries, and late-night bars and clubs. Inland are the Mercat Cabanyal food market and the Museu de l’Arròs de València, focusing on the city’s rice production history.

Guadalest is a Valencian town and municipality located in a mountainous area of the comarca of Marina Baixa, in the province of Alicante, Spain. The medieval castle overshadowing the Guadalest valley was originally built in the 11th century, during the Muslim rule over the Iberian Peninsula. It served to control the valley, as infighting between the smaller kingdoms left by the disintegration of the Caliphate of Córdoba was constant.

In the 13th century, after the Christian conquest of the region, the castle and the town were incorporated into the Kingdom of Valencia by James I of Aragon. As Christian colonization was anecdotal, Muslim inhabitants of the region were allowed to remain in the valley and work its land until the expulsion of the Moriscos.

We took the scenic route in our way back to Valencia from Santa Pola specifically to explore the inland mountains - only and hour from the Mediterranean. It’s great to be back in the EU.
