My country grieves,
And the Mississippi flows
With poignant tears,
From the misery it knows.
Its pain remains as the sacrifices grow,
When a soldier doesn’t come home.

Last Sunday, I read an original poem at the Patriots’ Day ceremony at the town hall in New Milford, CT. It was fascinating learning more about Roger Sherman, a signer of the Declaration of Independence from CT.

It was a great celebratory weekend! America 250 celebrations are in full swing. I read an original poem on Saturday in Westbrook, CT where they had a sunset ceremony on the town green to commemorate Paul Revere’s ride! There was a drummer a fifer, a horse, and two beacons in the church bell tower.

Community Invitation! “Two Lights For Tomorrow”

The Town of Westbrook kicks off their 250th Anniversary Celebrations on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 7:30 pm on the Town Green.

A Commemoration of Paul Revere’s Ride will take place followed with a special presentation by Newtown’s Poet Laureate, Lauren Clifford.

A commemoration of Paul Revere’s ride will take place with a brief sunset ceremony on the town green, featuring two spotlights shining from the Congregational Church steeple. This “Two Lights for Tomorrow” initiative will be observed in towns and cities across the nation. Residents are encouraged to display two lights—such as candles, LED lanterns, or flashlights—in their windows or on their porches on the evening of April 18 in honor of the nation’s founding. The two lights symbolize freedom, unity, and the ongoing vigilance needed to preserve them.

Also be sure to visit our Westbrook 250 page to stay up to date on all the activities being planned in the coming months. https://www.westbrookct.us/1686/America-250

Tonight, a soccer player got dropped off to practice in style. I snapped a pic for inspiration and wrote this poem on the fly (or on the horsefly).

HORSEPOWER

My car climbs up the Treadwell slope—
An engine’s might is how it copes.
But my two-hundred-forty-eight
Can’t match the beauty of her gait.

Four years ago, I had the pleasure of presenting an original poem at the centennial celebration of the Palace Theater in Waterbury, CT. My poem highlighted the contributions of theater magnate Sylvester Z. Poli. In 1916, he was the world’s largest individual theater owner, owning 28 total, 18 of which were in CT. He is another immigrant to honor as we celebrate America 250 CT!
