His professional background is steeped in European and American art and its interpretation across painting, decorative arts and material culture. PHILADELPHIA — “A Nation of Artists,” Philadelphia’s two-museum extravaganza in commemoration of the United States’ 250th anniversary, begins and ends with flags. The display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) opens with silken regimental flags of the American Revolution, and visitors enter the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) through a gallery dedicated to the American flag across time and media. Flags peek out from portraits, street scenes, quilts and even the highly conceptual and abstract work of the later Twentieth Century. The dual exhibition is broadly conceived, diverse, and even challenging at times, but the flags leave no doubt about its reason for being. The exhibition is on view through the semiquincentennial year at the PMA and at PAFA, closing July 5 and September 5, 2027, respectively...

COPAKE, N.Y. — Copake Auction’s May 29-30 Estate Auction featured more than 1,000 lots of estate-fresh merchandise in a variety of categories over the course of its two days. With a 99 percent sell-through rate, the sale totaled $300,000, garnering a very positive reaction from manager Seth Fallon. It was a “tremendous sale,” he explained, “Both days were very strong, with a lot of action. There were lots of in-house bidders, phone bidders and thousands of pre-bids. The internet was also very strong. We are very grateful!”

SUDBURY, MASS. — The end of May at Tremont Auctions brought 631 lots across the block in the firm’s Annual Spring Fine Arts & Antiques auction on May 31, offering silver and gold estate jewelry, paintings and prints from the Sixteenth to Twenty-First Century, bronze sculptures, Americana, porcelain decorative arts, American clocks, furniture and more. The sale had a 95 percent sell-through rate, with only around 30 lots unsold.

MYERSTOWN, PENN. — Kleinfelter’s Auction closed out the month of May with its Online Asian, Tribal & Oceanic Antiques sale, an 814-lot event offering a single-owner collection on May 31, which earned a 90 percent sell-through rate by the fall of the last gavel.

The $27,940 finish for a Qing dynasty Chinese seated Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara bronze statuette marked the highest price of the day. Likely made in the mid Nineteenth Century, the work depicted a deity “who has attained the highest level of enlightenment and compassion,” according to catalog notes. The base of the figure was engraved with Chinese characters, while its bottom was incised with the Vishvavajra symbol of Tibetan Buddhism...

PLAINFIELD, N.H. — William Smith Auctions’ annual Post-Memorial Day Live Auction was conducted on May 27 this year and comprised more than 630 lots from estates in New England, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Sarasota, Fla. Matt Zayatz, William Smith’s director of marketing shared, “The auction was very well attended with over 100 bidders in house and over 7,500 registered bidders total. Overall, the auction was better attended than typical auctions.” A strong social media campaign ahead of the sale helped drive interest, and the increased in-person turnout may have been a result.
