CANAAN, N.Y. — Thirty-one years of auction action were celebrated in Ralph Fontaine’s Heritage Auctions’ 609-lot auction on September 27. The online-only auction presented lots in all categories, including antique furniture, sculpture, musical instruments, sterling silver, gold and diamond jewelry. Owner and auctioneer Ralph Fontaine shared that, together, coins, silver and jewelry brought more than $100,000.

However, the auction’s top lot overall was an estate-fresh set of ten iridescent glass Lily shades. Though apparently unmarked, they were cataloged as possibly by Tiffany. Each featured purplish-gold coloring, a wavy rim, a thin polished fitter and gold interior. The dazzling blown-glass shades found a buyer for $97,600...

GENESEO, N.Y. — Two auction sessions over two days saw a wealth of fine art and antiques, including Arts and Crafts material, command attention and strong prices at Cottone Auctions September 23-24. PITTSFIELD, MASS. — Seven of the top ten lots in Fontaine’s September 26-27 Fine & Decorative Arts auction sold above the $100,000 mark, and all but one were Tiffany Studios lighting fixtures.

Leading the auction that attained $5.325 million in all were two examples of Tiffany’s perennially popular Dragonfly lamps. Selling very early on in the sale was a circa 1910 Tiffany Studios dichroic Drophead Dragonfly table lamp that brought $262,500, easily outperforming its $120/160,000 estimate. The 32-inch tall lamp had a 22-inch diameter shade and a telescoping Cat’s Paw base. Two lots later, an early, circa 1898, Dragonfly table lamp crossed the block to take $225,000, followed shortly after by a circa 1905 Dragonfly table lamp at $125,000...

SOUTH YARMOUTH, MASS. — The 38th annual Cape Cod Glass Show & Sale, sponsored by the Cape Cod Glass Club, transformed the Cultural Center of Cape Cod into a sparkling showcase on September 19-20 for a dizzying array of glass, from striking art glass vases and intricate, botanically correct paperweights, to jewel-toned Bohemian and Czech glass.

Formerly a bank, the Cultural Center was quite suitable as a venue for the show, featuring about a dozen dealers across four spaces; several glass museums and organizations set up booths as well. The exhibitors are all veterans in their field and quite passionate about glass. Bill Thomas of William Thomas Antiques (Abingdon, Md.) even stayed in the area a few days after the show to give a talk on Gillinder Glass at the Sandwich Public Library, and the show offered visitors a glass identification booth where they could learn more about pieces from their own collections...

ROCKVILLE, MD. — Weschler’s Auctioneers & Appraisers spent two days at the end of September auctioning jewelry, fine art, furniture and other antique and vintage finds. On September 24, the firm presented Fine Jewelry From a Private California Collector, and on September 25, they conducted the Capital Collections Auction.

Allison Mulholland, the firm’s marketing coordinator, reported, “With the combined exhibition for our Capital Collections and Fine Jewelry from a Private California Collector auctions, the ever-popular jewelry lots got a lot of attention in the gallery and plenty of views online.”...

YORK, PENN. — Biannually, Americana and primitive enthusiasts make the trek to York, Penn., where The Original Semi-Annual York Antiques Show & Sale goes up at the York Fairgrounds and Convention Center. Filling Memorial Hall East with approximately 60 select exhibitors, show manager Melvin L. Arion hosted a plethora of enthusiastic buyers for the show’s 187th iteration spanning September 18 and 19.

With several additional perks marketed, including free parking, a smoke-free building, credit card accessible payments and good food, buyers beat the end-of-summer heat to peruse several aisles of established dealers’ wares. According to several dealers, while Friday, the first day of the show, seemed to attract more of the “serious buyers” — dedicated and longtime clients, as well as industry professionals — Antiques and The Arts Weekly observed a robust crowd of curious and knowledgeable buyers on the second and final day as well....

JACKSON, WYO. — Jackson Hole Art Auction presented two live auctions at the Center for the Arts September 18-19 leading off with Mark Maggiori’s solo exhibition, Rise of the Western Lights, and followed the next day with the 20th Annual Jackson Hole Art Auction. The combined auction sales totaled $18.3 million with a 94 percent sell-through rate. The weekend realized the highest sale total in the auction’s history.

The Maggiori exhibition comprised 31 artworks and was presented throughout the Center’s lobby, where visitors had the opportunity to view the collection in an immersive setting before the auction. The white-glove sale achieved $9.3 million in sales, with fast-paced, competitive bidding unfolding before an at-capacity audience in the theater. Multiple works surpassed the artist’s previous auction record, and ultimately the new world record was set by “The Prophecy,” an oil on canvas that realized $1.3 million against an estimate of $300/500,000....

Lara Yeager-Crasselt, an American art historian and curator specializing in early modern European art, was named the Aso O. Tavitian Curator of early modern European painting at the Clark Art Institute last December. Formerly a curator and department head of European painting and sculpture at the Baltimore Museum of Art and a curator at the Leiden Collection in New York City, she has curated more than a dozen exhibitions at these and other prominent institutions. MILWAUKEE — At its height in the 1840s, a century after the sect broke away from the Quakers, Shaker membership in the United States peaked at around 5,000. From its inception in Britain in the rapidly industrializing cities of Bolton and Manchester, the Shakers, led by Mother Ann Lee, migrated to the American colonies in 1774.

As noted in the text accompanying “The Shakers: A World in the Making,” on view through January 31 at the Milwaukee Art Museum, the sect “formally known as the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, built entire communities around equality, communal living, shared labor and spiritual purpose. Their furniture, tools, textiles, architecture and domestic objects reflected those beliefs, demonstrating how design could shape everyday life. Every object served a purpose. Every space was carefully considered. Nothing was made without intention.” Today, only two or three Shakers remain in Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community in Maine.
