EAST DENNIS, MASS. — On May 7, Eldred’s saw 245 lots of art, furniture, decorative arts, rugs and various collectibles cross the block in the firm’s Modern Art + Design sale. “The sale total was $221,740, toward the top of the pre-sale estimate range. The sell-through rate was about 81 percent,” shared Cheryl Stewart, Eldred’s head of marketing.

She continued, “This was an online-only auction with live internet, phone and absentee bidding. There wasn’t an audience. There were 149 buyers and more than 250 registered bidders (these are people who bid with us on the phone or via absentee bid, plus successful online bidders).”...

NEW YORK CITY — The hustle and bustle of New York City, the city that never sleeps, is always apparent upon exiting Grand Central Station after the almost two-hour train ride from Connecticut. Even in the evenings, when most suburban neighborhoods begin to tuck themselves in for the night, the city seems to take on a new vigor with marquee signs lighting up for blocks and people of all ages making their way to a plethora of evening events.

One such event on the evening of April 30 was the exclusive VIP preview for the ABAA New York International Antiquarian Book Fair (NYIABF), now in its 66th year. KALAMAZOO, MICH. — Of all colors, blue is perhaps the one that holds the greatest influence over our lives. From deep blue oceans and large lakes to azure skies, blue is all around. Whether mined from nature or created from synthetic materials, the color is also one of the most prominently featured in art history across materials and traditions.

Interestingly, cobalt blue, which prominently figures in blue-and-white porcelain, a style perfected in China and widely exported starting in the Thirteenth Century, was one of the most challenging hues to develop, necessitating precise firing control and temperatures. Cobalt was also ground up to create smalt, a painting pigment. Similarly, indigo and Prussian blue are popular colors that have long been used in artmaking from dyeing textiles to Japanese ukiyo-e prints....
