THE NEXT GENERATION OF JAZZ IS IN THE HOUSE!

We love hearing this talented group of young musicians rehearsing at Parallel Sound Studio!

There's something special about jazz. You can't just play your own part. You have to listen, react, communicate and leave space for everyone else. It's a musical conversation, and these kids are learning how to speak the language.

It's also pretty great hearing horns, drums, bass and keys filling the studio with something a little different from our usual rock & roll.

Keep swinging, guys!

A drummer's job isn't to play as many fills as possible.

It's to make the band feel GOOD.

Solid time, Good dynamics, Listening, Supporting the song, And knowing when NOT to play.

Great drumming isn't about hitting more things.

It's about making everybody else sound better.

Learning songs is fun.

Playing them with a BAND is different.

You learn to listen.

Communicate.

Recover from mistakes.

Follow a drummer.

Support a singer.

Perform for an audience.

And occasionally argue about how the song should end.

That's being in a band.

Want to know a secret?

A ridiculous number of famous songs are built from the same four chords.

I – V – vi – IV.

Different melodies. Different tempos. Different arrangements.

Same basic harmonic ingredients.

Once you start recognizing chord progressions, songs stop sounding like isolated pieces of music and you start hearing the patterns underneath them.

Lessons teach you how to play your instrument.

Bands teach you how to listen, react, communicate and make music with other people.

And yes, playing onstage is considerably more fun than playing scales alone in your bedroom!

Why should kids learn an instrument?

Sure, they'll learn notes, chords and rhythms.

But they'll also learn how to listen, collaborate, solve problems, perform in front of people and create something that's completely their own.

And sometimes they get to turn an amp up really loud.

That's a pretty good education.
