THE PATRIOT (2000, newly restored in 4k), screens Friday, July 3rd @ 7:30! Directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) and written by Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan), THE PATRIOT features gripping performances by Mel Gibson, villain Jason Isaacs, and the ebullient star of the late Heath Ledger. THE PATRIOT may not be the most historically accurate tale, but it boats meticulous attention to Colonial era detail and is a stirring Revolutionary War epic to commemorate America’s 250th birthday. See it back on the big screen in one of America’s most storied, colonial cities!

Widowed farmer, Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), with a brave but brutal military past, decides not to join up when the British arrive in 1776. Hailed as “the hero of Fort Wilderness” at every town and tavern in the colonies, Benjamin is haunted by his war-time deeds. However, when his son enlists and is later captured by the enemy, the former soldier must abandon his new-found pacifist principles in order to rescue his oldest child (Heath Ledger), and forms a regiment of Carolina patriots, whose guerrilla tactics prove pivotal to the US war effort.

WBCN AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION screens Wednesday, July 1st @ 6:00pm! The true story of how radio, politics, and rock and roll converged at a turbulent moment in American history — a story that feels newly relevant amid ongoing national debates about media, democracy, and dissent. The film — newly re-released under its expanded title — tells the story of how a Boston rock radio station helped ignite the cultural and political revolution of the late 1960s and beyond, becoming both participant and platform for the anti-war movement, civil rights, women’s and LGBTQ rights, and the rise of countercultural media.

The documentary includes Bruce Springsteen’s first radio interview and live in-studio performance (1973), and Patti Smith’s first radio concert (1975), along with archival material from Jane Fonda, Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Garcia, David Bowie, and Lou Reed, among others. The Boston Globe called it a film to “watch with awe.”

Directed by Peabody Award–winner Bill Lichtenstein, who began working at WBCN at age 14 in 1970.

This screening features a post-film Q & A with- Executive Producer Rob Sennott, WBCN’s first Program Director Sam Kopper, WBCN’s first female DJ Debbie Ullman, legendary rock musician James Montgomery in a discussion lead by Hey Rhody Editor and DJ Ken Abrams. Hear what it was like from the people who were there!

John Ford’s masterpiece THE SEARCHERS screens restored for its 70th anniversary- Tuesday, July 7th @ 7:30. Featuring legendary Hollywood players behind and in front of the camera, THE SEARCHERS is likely the best Western ever made, and certainly the best looking. Both grandly epic and psychologically layered, the antihero portrayal of John Wayne’s deeply flawed, obsessive protagonist was ahead of its time. We’re advocates of seeing every movie in a great cinema, but the call to see THE SEARCHERS on the big screen with Ford’s beautifully shot vistas must be heeded!

In this revered Western, Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) returns home to Texas after the Civil War. When members of his brother’s family are killed or abducted by Comanches, he vows to track down his surviving relatives and bring them home. Eventually, Edwards gets word that his niece Debbie (Natalie Wood) is alive, and, along with her adopted brother, Martin Pawley (Jeffrey Hunter), he embarks on a dangerous mission to find her, journeying deep into Comanche territory.

This weekend, world famous journalist AMY GOODMAN takes on soldiers, politicians, and corporate media in a fearless pursuit of truth. America’s buzziest documentary STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE opens for a 4 show run with Democracy Now! founder Amy Goodman in-person joined by directors Carl Deal and Tia Lessin Saturday/Sunday! Screening June 27th @ 7:30 (w/ Q&A), June 28th @ 2:00 (w/ Q&A), June 29th-30th @ 3:00. Undeterred by armed soldiers, evasive politicians, and riot police, journalist Amy Goodman has reported some of the most consequential stories of our time. Steal This Story, Please! is a gripping portrait of the trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. From the frontlines of global conflicts to the organized chaos of her daily news show Democracy Now!, Goodman broadcasts stories and voices routinely silenced by commercial media.

Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (Trouble the Water, The Janes) take us behind the scenes with the warm, wisecracking granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi — raised in a tradition of asking hard questions – as she navigates a news landscape reshaped by technology, corporate consolidation, and political assaults on the press – and on truth itself. Urgent, provocative and unexpectedly funny, Steal This Story, Please! is both a call to action and a celebration of resistance, posing the question: what happens to democracy when the press surrenders to power?

Saturday, June 27th’s 7:30 will feature a post-film Q&A w/ Amy, Tia, & Carl moderated by John Pantalone (Editor & Writer, Newport This Week). Sunday’s 2pm screening also features a post-film Q&A with Amy, Tia, & Carl moderated by Bernardo Motta (Associate Professor of Journalism, Roger Williams University).
