Film, photography, and pop culture collided at last week’s screening of RealRonHoward’s new documentary AVEDON at the Avon Cinema in Providence!

Our audience enjoyed a behind-the-lens look into the life and vision of photographer Richard Avedon, and how he created some of pop culture’s most recognizable images of figures like James Baldwin, Marylin Monroe, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Toni Morrison, Tennessee Williams, Andy Warhol, and more.

We were delighted to be joined by Director of Photography Robert Chappell for a post-film conversation moderated by Rhode Island School of Design Senior Photography Critic, Thad Russell. It was fascinating to hear Robert’s perspective on the daunting task of shooting a documentary about one of the titans of photography! Massive thanks to Robert and Thad for sharing their knowledge with us and to AVON CINEMA for being wonderful hosts!

Last week’s screening of UNBOWED at Hope High School was incredibly special! We were honored to work with Rhode Island directors Mae Gammino and David H. Wells to show their new film about Dr. Omar Bah, the founder of Providence’s Refugee Dream Center. The entire evening was a testament to the importance of showcasing local stories and the transformational power of community.

Dr. Bah, Mae and David were joined by Chief Legal Counsel for the Lawyers’ Committee for RI Amy Romero, for a post-film conversation moderated by Rhode Island School of Design Associate Professor Jess Brown. Our audience was energized and inspired by hearing first-hand from Dr. Bah and Amy about the life-changing work being done to support refugees making new homes in Rhode Island.

We were so grateful to host this event in the newly-renovated auditorium at Hope High, where we have been serving as an industry partner for their filmmaking career & technical education program! The program’s students assisted with all production aspects of this screening, from backstage to front-of-house! Thank you again to Hope High School, Maggie Moore Anderson, and Josephine Sittenfeld for welcoming us into this amazing space!

We are beyond thrilled to present the premiere screening of LAST RUN OF THE BLACK DUCK on Tuesday, November 10 at The JPT Film + Event Center! Travel back in time with us to Prohibition-era Newport with live music straight from the 1920’s and incredible reenactments filmed right here on the island!

Set during the height of Prohibition, LAST RUN OF THE BLACK DUCK follows two men on opposite sides of the law: Charlie Travers, a young mariner drawn into New England’s booming rum-running trade, and Alexander C. Cornell, a U.S. Coast Guard commander tasked with stopping the flow of illegal liquor along the coast. In December 1929, their paths converged off Newport Harbor in a fatal clash dubbed the “Newport Massacre.” The local tragedy prompted widespread investigations and press coverage, becoming part of the national debate surrounding Prohibition law and its consequences.

In 1972, genre-defying filmmaker William Greaves assembled a DIY camera crew, including his son, David Greaves, for what he considered to be the most important event he captured on film: a cocktail party with the living luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance. More than fifty years later, Director David and Producer Liani Greaves, have completed their father and grandfather’s most ambitious project, allowing audiences a glimpse into one of the richest cultural convenings of the 20th century.

Even a brewing nor’easter couldn’t stop the joy inside the Jane Pickens on Friday night during our screening of TIME WARP! 👄

We had the privilege of witnessing the triumphant return of RKO Army to the JPT after 30 years! Their pre-film mini-performance was electrifying and the energy was contagious - audience members were on their feet and dancing in the aisles. We are so grateful to RKO Army for giving our attendees a taste of the Rocky Horror shadowcast experience before watching the The Starling Co.’s journey in TIME WARP!

After a brief visit to the Transylvanian Convention, TIME WARP took our audience to Rock Springs, Wyoming to meet Kenny Starling McCormack and the Starling Company as they navigate staging an unapologetically q***r show in their conservative community. From first rehearsals, tense town meetings, to the final curtain, it was impossible not to root for each and every member of the troupe. After the curtain came down, both in Rock Springs and in Newport, audience members were left with full hearts, itching to do the Time Warp again.

Next week, we’re heading up to Providence for UNBOWED at Hope High School on 10/6 and AVEDON at the avoncinema on 10/8 - see you there!

AVEDON traces the life and legacy of an artist who used photography to reinvent the world around him. Drawing on unprecedented access to his personal archives, never-before-seen stills, intimate behind-the-lens footage, and new interviews with his closest collaborators, the film explores how his singular eye both reflected and reshaped the visual language of the 20th century, and why even the most iconic image is only half the story.
