Custom painting to celebrate a local hero’s 44 years of commitment to community. The Peninsula Agency on Aging’s beloved William “Bill” Massey.
“When talking to people who have known and worked alongside Bill for up to 2 + decades, it did not take long to realize what kind of man he is--- a GREAT man. Those wonderful conversations gave me tons of inspiration to work from…but I keyed in on the common themes that seemed to remain consistent among everyone.
“Blue River Views” is a 20 x 24 inch acrylic painting on stretched canvas. The painting marries 2 distant scenes; one being a realistic interior depiction of Bill’s office, embellished with items nodding to his passions and attributes. This view marks his professional work. To contrast this, I have created a surrealistic view through his window---a monochromatic overlook of a Rappahannock River scene in Urbanna Virginia, custom-created from source images of the location itself. The peace and tranquility of the river mirrors the peace that Bill provides to his staff---with many people describing a sense of security and trust that emanates from his leadership.
Looking through the window you will see the landscape is filled with blue hues, as the color that comes to mind from the overwhelming majority of the team was blue. From his eyes, his snappy dressing, his honesty, “blue” grass music and even his “still water” tranquility---the color blue was burned in the minds of those he works with. The landscape reflects his love of his town of Urbanna and the outdoors. The cross on the darker boat is a nod to his strong faith.
In the foreground (Bill’s office) many symbols are interwoven into the work. I noted a Kawanis mug on his desk, so I included it---in blue. The work gloves on the desk represent his love for farming and gardening, but also his willingness to roll up his sleeves and do what needs to be done. Whether it’s cutting grass for an aging adult or delivering Meals on Wheels, Bill is no stranger to hard work and is dedicated to serving others. Choosing blue for the gloves also feels a bit medical, reminding me of Bill’s described healing attributes---his humor, love for fun, love for music, love for humanity, and advocacy for care.
I was told Bill is not only a sports fan, attending camps and games, but he also coached football…so I included a football to represent that side of him. The blue pad and pen on the desk contains 3 words: “consistency”, “dedication” and “compassion”; 3 words that came up repeatedly when staff described Bill. I would imagine this figurative pad would be left for the next person who sits in that chair…as a guide of core values when leading this agency. Behind the desk sits a table that typically holds Bill’s printer. In the painting, that table holds a compass, representing Bill’s ability to “stay the course”, lead with purpose and intention, and remain in control even when times are uncertain. Last but not least, framed in gold on that table is Bill’s beloved pup, Marley, who loves to travel with him.
I really enjoyed creating this, but I was most intrigued by the outpour of unique stories of Bill’s impact, amazing reputation, and overall unyielding commitment to the community. I am grateful for the opportunity to help honor and celebrate Bill. Congratulations!” - D. Duck
