One of Brooklyn’s biggest and most iconic cultural celebrations returns on Labor Day, bringing Caribbean pride, music, food, flags, elaborate costumes and nonstop energy back to Eastern Parkway. The celebration is known for the sounds of soca, calypso, reggae, steel pan and more, with communities from across the Caribbean coming together to represent their islands and heritage.
The tradition in New York dates back to the 1930s, when Trinidadian immigrant Jessie Wardell helped organize Carnival celebrations in Harlem. In the 1960s, the celebration moved to Brooklyn, and by 1968 it had found its home along Eastern Parkway.
Today, the West Indian American Day Carnival is one of New York City’s largest cultural celebrations, carrying generations of Caribbean history, tradition and pride through the streets of Brooklyn. ❤️💛💚
