Lau Aganuu Faasoa Teaching the Samoan art of oratory, honorifics, and tulafale leadership.

06/09/2026

Many people hear the word fa'alupega and immediately think of village honorifics.

But did you know that fa'alupega extend far beyond villages?

Throughout Samoan society, fa'alupega are used to acknowledge and honor the dignity, authority, and identity of villages, districts, churches, clergy, governments, matai, tufuga, organizations, and many others.

Understanding fa'alupega is not simply about memorization—it is about understanding who we are, where we come from, and how we properly show respect to others through our words.

As Samoans, our speeches carry meaning. The way we acknowledge others reflects our knowledge, preparation, and respect for the occasion.

The malofie (pe‘a) and the malu are among the most recognizable symbols of Samoan culture. Yet their true meaning goes far beyond the patterns themselves.

They represent commitment.
They represent service.
They represent identity.
They represent a connection to generations who came before us.
