What is it about portraits that has always interested me? It is the uniqueness of each one of us. Well, why not just photograph people? Because a drawn or painted portrait is the connection of my hand to my eyes. My eyes tell my hand where to go. And my eyes see so much more than a camera. My eyes see with emotion. The stroke of a brush or the mark of a pencil is emotion. And painting and drawing is like music. Each pencil mark or brush stroke is a note. Is it quiet or is it loud? Is it soft and gentle or is it bold and strong?

Fine Art Portraiture

"Capturing the individuality of a person through likeness, gesture and expression has been my lifelong fascination. The art of portraiture is about seeing the dignity and beauty in each individual".

Background:

Ann Harter received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in painting from Miami University of Ohio; her formal education included spending her freshman year of college at the American University of Beirut, and her sophomore year at the University of Mexico and the Escola Panamericana de Arte in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After graduation she became a graphic artist and freelance illustrator; portrait art continuing to be her primary interest. With time Ann decided to devote all of her artistic energy to the art of portraiture. Over the years she has been commissioned to create numerous portraits for collectors throughout the New England area. Ann is also a professional soprano soloist, vocalist and voice teacher at The Musical Suite in Newburyport, MA. You can see her at annhartersoprano.com .
