This is a pastel portrait commission that I received recently. The customer had a black and white photo and asked if I could do a colored pastel portrait of the photo and this is the result.

Another portrait story; a person came to me to see if I could do a portrait of their parents from an older photo. They brought the photo to me. It had been taken some time in the 1950s and was a black and white 8 x 10. It was a large group of people; at least ten, as I recall. Their father was on the left hand side of the group and their mother was standing on the far right side of the group. They were asking if I could do a head-and-shoulders pastel portrait of the two of them side-by-side and in color. This was the result.

These charming young men came to my studio several years ago to sit for their portrait. They are brothers. Many reference photos were taken as they moved about. Moments when they were actually sitting were limited, needless to say. But I was able to take enough photos of them seated. The idea came to me to ask them to bring their favorite small toy. And I was glad I did because I liked what it added to the portrait. It was in the winter time and so they took their boots off before they came in and I noticed what great socks they had on. So I decided to do the portrait with them just wearing socks. I painted it in 2001, so almost 20 years has flown by and the family treasures it; capturing a moment in time. The finished size is 24 × 30, oil paint on stretched linen canvas.
