Jackie is one of the Newburgh residents featured in Dmitri Kasterine's portraits on Safe Harbors Green. She came by this morning to take her print home, and shared with us her memories of the Hotel Newburgh, the neighborhood, and the Green.

More changes are coming to Safe Harbors Green: as our new mural is going up, we are also saying farewell to another long-running public art project on our walls. For the past 14 years, the Green has hosted this collection of 44 portraits of Newburgh residents by photographer Dmitri Kasterine.

Installed in 2012, the portraits were taken beginning in 1996 and are featured in a companion book by Kasterine, "Newburgh, Portrait of a City" (Quantuck Lane Press, 2012). A familiar sight to many, the portraits have become a local landmark for community members and visitors alike.

The prints have deteriorated significantly over the past several years, and so our team made the decision to de-install the project and make room for new public art on Safe Harbors Green.

We working with community advocate, Safe Harbors board member, and Orange County Legislator Gabrielle Hill to help place these prints in the hands of the subjects and their families after de-installation. Notice anything different on Safe Harbors Green? We are thrilled to be working with artist Sophy Tuttle and Beyond Walls to bring a new mural to Safe Harbors and to Newburgh!

Commissioned for the tenth anniversary of Safe Harbors Green, the mural draws inspiration from the native plant life and pollinator habitat found within the Green, while reflecting themes of growth, resilience, and hope. Once completed, the mural will feature larger-than-life Joe-Pye-weed, milkweed, eastern cottonwood, blue flag iris, the carpenter bee, tiger swallowtail butterfly, and the Isabella tiger moth--each chosen because they are native to the Hudson Valley, and for the symbolic meaning these species hold across various cultures, embodying qualities like connection and balance.

Sophy will be painting now through September 2, and we will toast to the new mural at our SUPERNATURAL Gala on September 17. Follow along for more updates on her progress over the coming days, and if you're in the neighborhood stop by and look up!

In the summer of 2016, Safe Harbors transformed a vacant lot at the corner of Broadway and Liberty Street into a vibrant, biodynamic half-acre park. A decade later, the Green is an enduring testament to Safe Harbors’ commitment to revitalizing downtown Newburgh with innovative development projects that prioritize community care, sustainability, and responsible stewardship.

At the gala we will honor our 2026 Cornerstone of the Community Bryan Quinn, designer of Safe Harbors Green. We will also recognize our Safe Harbors Green Stewardship Partner, Resorts World Hudson Valley, as well as the many community members and partners who helped bring the lot to life in 2016.

Gala proceeds benefit Safe Harbors’ mission of transforming lives and building community through housing and the arts.

THIS SATURDAY! Join us on the Green at 7pm for Salsa Under the Stars.

Whether you’re new to the dance floor or a seasoned pro, you can get into the swing of things with a public dance lesson in salsa and other Latin dances led by our hosts, take part in dance contests with exciting prizes, enjoy local food trucks, and more.

This year’s program will feature Bomba, a traditional song, dance, and drum rhythm of resistance from Puerto Rico, developed by enslaved West Africans and their descendants. Members of Hudson Valley Bomba will lead participants in a dance and drumming lesson, sharing the history of the form and its influence on Latin music and contemporary artists such as Willie Colon, Ricky Martin, and Bad Bunny.

This event is FREE and open to the public. All ages and dance experience levels are welcome!

¡Este sábado! Acompáñanos en la zona verde a las 7:00 p. m. para disfrutar de "Salsa bajo las estrellas". Tanto si eres principiante en la pista de baile como si ya tienes experiencia, podrás entrar en ritmo con una clase abierta de salsa y otros bailes latinos dirigida por nuestros anfitriones, participar en concursos de baile con premios increíbles, disfrutar de la oferta de camiones de comida locales y mucho más.

El programa de este año también incluirá la Bomba, un ritmo tradicional de Puerto Rico —que combina canto, baile y percusión— nacido de la resistencia y desarrollado por africanos occidentales esclavizados y sus descendientes. Integrantes del grupo Hudson Valley Bomba guiarán a los participantes en una clase de baile y percusión, compartiendo la historia de este género y su influencia en la música latina y en artistas contemporáneos como Willie Colón, Ricky Martin y Bad Bunny.

Ritz Kidz Circus proved there’s nothing quite like connecting at just the right time.

This past weekend, the Ritz Kids took us on a trip through time referencing everything from the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey to Walk the Dinosaur (iykyk) to K-Pop Demon Hunters. Their showcase was the culmination of two weeks of incredibly dedicated work from students and coaches that produced a safe, exciting, delightful, and joyful show. The Friday Showcase was followed by the coaches’ performance on Saturday, which had us smiling and laughing in between all the jaw-dropping moments. To (big) top it off, we seriously couldn’t have asked for better weather!

Huge thank you to the whole team and to the photographers who captured the event so perfectly. And especially to our community, for coming out and showing your support. See you next time!
