In a box that originally contained altar candles, Saar has placed personal artifacts that pay homage to the fine values handed down from one generation to the next. While some of the objects are from her own family, the photographs are not.

Saar explained:
There has been an apparent thread in my art that weaves from early prints of the 1960 ‘s through later collages and assemblages and ties into the current installations. That thread is a curiosity about the mystical.
I am intrigued with combining the remnant of memories, fragments of relics and ordinary objects, with the components of technology. It’s a wave of delving into the past and reaching into the future simultaneously. The art itself becomes the bridge.

The Newark Museum of Art mourns the passing of Arthur F. Ryan, a visionary business leader, generous philanthropist, and steadfast champion of Newark and its cultural institutions.

Under his leadership at Prudential , the company became an extraordinary partner to the Museum, strengthening its mission through transformative philanthropy, civic leadership, and enduring investments that continue to shape the institution today. Art and his wife, Pat, shared a deep commitment to the Museum and to art’s power to connect people across cultures. Their vision helped inspire what is now The Pat and Art Ryan Global Asia Gallery, a lasting reflection of their generosity and engagement with the Museum’s collections and the stories they tell.

On behalf of everyone at The Newark Museum of Art, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Pat, their family, and all who were fortunate enough to know Art. His legacy lives on in this Museum, in the city he loved, and in the generations of visitors who will continue to be inspired by his vision.

How much have you changed since the day you were born?

Chitra Ganesh’s Adventures of the White Beryl, inspired by a Tibetan Buddhist manuscript, follows a shapeshifting protagonist who transforms throughout the video. Ganesh often includes q***r and female characters who enthusiastically shape their future. Like them, we change every day and can alter into who we want to be. Let’s celebrate the change!
