We are saddened to learn of the passing of Danny Simmons, an artist, advocate, philanthropist, and friend of Newark's creative community.
Danny shared a longstanding relationship with both the City of Newark and Newark Arts Council. In 2017, he generously presented a solo exhibition of his work as part of Open Doors Citywide Arts Festival, the predecessor to today's Newark Arts Festival. Pictured is Danny joined by former Newark Arts Council Executive Director Jeremy Johnson and artist Jerry Gant during that exhibition.
Most recently, Danny was here in October at NJPAC for a book talk celebrating Antoinette Ellis-Williams, moderated by Newark Arts Executive Director Lauren LeBeaux Craig.
Danny's dedication to artists, creative communities, and cultural equity left a lasting impact far beyond our city. We are grateful for the generosity, wisdom, and vision he shared with Newark Arts and so many others throughout the years.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched.
Rest in peace, Danny Simmons.
