I could go on and on about how special it is for me to second shoot, but I'll keep it /fairly/ concise here:
1. I get to witness so many more beautiful love stories!
2. I have the great fun of hanging out with my peers and friends while we do the thing we love.
3. There's a bit less pressure, but I care very deeply that everyone is looked after and I love creating beautiful images.
4. Being the second photographer gives me the opportunity to take a step back, engage more with the surroundings, and be more of a wallflower. I am able to capture so many amazing interactions this way.
Unsure what a second shooter is? Lemme tell ya!
Essentially, the second photographer/second shooter is simply "the other photographer." We are typically hired by the primary/lead photographer, and the lead photog edits and delivers the images we take to the couple.
Most often, it's my job to be with whoever is getting ready in the separate space. Whether that's the groom, one of the brides, or one partner while the lead is with the other. I handle their details, portraits, and follow them to the ceremony or first look space so both sides of the day are fully covered simultaneously.
My advice to couples getting married and wondering if you need a second photographer:
1. Ask your photographer if they think you need one! We'll usually tell you up front and build it into your package, but it's always okay to ask.
2. Will you and your partner be getting ready in separate spaces?
3. Is it important to you to NOT see your partner until the aisle?
4. Do you want lots of environmental detail photos?
If you answered yes to any of these, I would encourage you to talk to your photographer about a second shooter.
IMPORTANT NOTE: do not hire your own second shooter (: We all have our trusted peers, and most of us have it in our contract that we are the ONLY photographer on-site. This keeps it streamlined and there's no confusion, no miscommunication, etc.
