Saturday July 18th, Dr. Helena D. Lewis will be honored with the Breya Knight Griot Award for Artistry and Advocacy.

The award acknowledges those whose work as an agent of change shines on and off the stage and page: storytellers and historians breathing through each draft as an example of Greatness Recited In Our Time.

It is named after the late, great Breya “BlkyBerryMolassez” Knight—a renowned poet, author, activist, and founder of the Breathing Poets Society—with the blessing of her mother, Minister Dyanna Aldridge, affectionately known as “Mama Breya.”

This coming August will mark the 10th Anniversary of Breya’s passing. We also recognize the one year anniversary of Minister Aldridge’s passing: mother and daughter, reunited in the heavens.

At the first Griot Gala in Kruger-Scott Mansion, EvoluCulture surprised two scheduled performers with the inaugural Griot Awards—host of People’s Open Mic Margie “Mia X” Johnson and Founder of When Women Speak, Ameerah Shabazz. Performing in tributes to were emcee and violinist J-Read (for Margie) and poet & playwright Dr. Helena D. Lewis (for Ameerah).

Fast forward to 2026, and it is Dr. Helena D. Lewis herself who will receive the award. Johnson, now the poet Laureate of Newark, NJ will be one of many tribute performers to Helena, alongside Starski, Lyric and Sean Battle.
