Layqa Nuna Yawar (b. Cuenca, Ecuador) is a multidisciplinary artist based on the unceded lands of the Lenni Lenape in present-day Newark, New Jersey. His practice explores migration, decolonization, and the reclamation of public space. Viewing the public square as both canvas and sanctuary, Layqa uses his self-chosen name, a reclamation of his Kichwa-Kañari heritage, as a guiding framework for his work. It reflects his commitment to peeling back the layers of colonial history and revealing the vibrant, often overlooked histories that lie beneath.

Headdress 75 is a large-scale public mural by .metaferia , unveiled in Newark in November 2025 as part of her By Way of Revolution series. It features Newark activist Nashel Brantley, portrayed as a symbol of collective memory and resistance. The mural’s “headdress” is a layered collage combining archival imagery from historic movements with personal and cultural materials, bridging past struggles with present-day identity. Originally a hand-cut mixed media piece, it was scaled into a multi-story installation using parachute cloth and painted elements. More than a portrait, it acts as a civic monument that honors everyday activists—especially Black and Brown women—as carriers of history and drivers of social change.
