On the night of August 21, 1955, eleven people at a farmhouse near Kelly, Kentucky, reported something they could not explain.
One of them, Billy Ray Taylor, said he had seen a bright object moving through the sky and disappearing near the property. About an hour later, the family began reporting strange figures outside the house.
They described the beings as only a few feet tall, with unusually large eyes, long arms, and a strange metallic-looking appearance.
Then the shooting began.
According to the witnesses, they fired at the figures several times. They claimed the creatures would fall backward or disappear into the darkness, only to return moments later.
By around 11 p.m., the frightened group drove to the Hopkinsville police station for help.
Police and other officers went back to the farmhouse. They found spent ammunition, damaged screens, and evidence that gunfire had taken place. But they found no creatures, bodies, blood, spacecraft, or clear physical evidence of an extraterrestrial visitor.
That is what makes the case so difficult to settle.
Skeptics later suggested that meteors, shadows, and even great horned owls may have contributed to what the family believed they were seeing. But that explanation remains an interpretationānot proof of what happened that night.
The Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter remains one of America's most famous UFO mysteries.
If you had been there that night, what explanation would you have believed?
