Ensemble Studio Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre focused on developing and producing original, provocative, and authentic new plays to engage and challenge our audiences. Founded in 1968 by Curt Dempster, EST has grown to a dynamic community of over 600 artists and has a prolific and energetic history of discovering and nurturing new voices and supporting artists throughout their creative lives. EST is committed to collaborative processes and is dedicated to inclusion across all aspects of identity and perspective by acknowledging and working to end systemic marginalization and oppression at all levels of the organization.

So You Want to Write a Science Play? 🔬✍️

Join our virtual panel for a conversation with playwrights and scientists to help guide or inspire your EST/Sloan comission application. The panel will end with a Q&A session for prospective grant recipients.

This year's panel features Carla Ching, Lucas Hnath, Dr. Diana Reiss, and Molly Webster moderated by Rachel Lin.

Since 1998, the EST/Sloan Project has awarded commissions totaling more than $4,000,000 to hundreds of theatre artists. Will you be next?

Since 1998, the EST/Sloan Project has awarded more than $4,000,000 to artists and theatres. New play commission applications require only a one page proposal.

The Bridgette A. Wimberly Memorial Writers Fund celebrates the life and work of Bridgette A. Wimberly, an acclaimed playwright and lifelong Artist Member of Ensemble Studio Theatre. Bridgette's EST contemporaries, Stephanie Berry and Cassandra Medley, are the inaugural 2026 recipients of the Award for their play, A Walk In Yaya's Garden.

"A journey of empowering stories that shine light on the overlooked narratives of elder African-American women. A beautifully woven tapestry of love, loss, triumph, and transformation."
