Peoples' Symphony Concerts

Peoples' Symphony Concerts Dedicated to providing high-caliber artists to the public for affordable prices since 1900.
(13)

Peoples’ Symphony Concerts mission is to serve the citizens of the New York area who are on a limited budget by presenting classical music performances of the highest caliber at affordable ticket prices.

We offer three in-person and online series of six concerts for as little as $56 (less than $10 per concert)!

The Peoples’ Symphony Concerts series was founded in 1900 by the conductor Franz

Arens, with the purpose of bringing the best music to students and workers for minimum prices. That winter, more than 7,000 people jammed into the old hall at Cooper Union to hear Mr. Arens, the son of an immigrant farmer, conduct his series of five Peoples' Symphony Concerts. Subscriptions for the five concerts ranged from $.25 to $1.25 and single tickets went for as little as $0.10 each. A conducting student in Europe who had been too poor to attend many concerts in his youth, Arens returned to New York determined to find a way to bring music to students, teachers, workers, and others unable to pay modern ticket prices. Since those early years, hundreds of thousands of Peoples' Symphony Concerts audience members have heard the world's foremost concert artists and ensembles at the lowest admission prices of any major series in the country.

12/11/2023

For over forty years, one of the highlights of every Peoples' Symphony Concerts season was an ensemble that the Washington Post called "chamber music royalty" and The New York Times and so many others considered "one of the world's preeminent piano trios" - The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio. When he played his first PSC recital, Joseph (Yossi) Kalichstein, not only captivated our audience, he won the heart and married a member of our audience, so his passing, last year, was a loss for the whole PSC Family.

His colleagues Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson could not imagine playing trios with anyone else but being fans of the sometimes neglected and wonderful piano quartets, they have formed an ensemble called ESPRESSIVO! to share this marvelous body of literature with audiences around the country. Their collaborators are longtime PSC favorites - pianist Anna Polonsky and Dover Quartet founding violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt - together they all will give us a great program of the glorious piano quartets of Mozart, Brahms and Schumann.

Join us in welcoming this stellar new ensemble as we close 2023 and celebrate Chanukah, Christmas and Kwanzaa.

If you don't already have an Arens Series ticket, you can get ESPRESSIVO! and three other great concerts, including one of the world's most treasured pianists - our 2024 Mystery Pianist. A series ticket for the Arens Series allows you to hear four great concerts for just $56. Single tickets are $20!

On this day in 1967, the Orchestre de Chambre Jean-Francois Paillard performed at Washington Irving--a program that undoubtedly included Pachelbel's Canon in D, which Paillard championed from obscurity to great renown, and is today one of the first pieces that many young musicians learn together in their first ensemble experience.

Do you recognize any other beloved artists in our 1967-68 season, when subscriptions were only $4 for six concerts??? 👀
