But I canโ€™t stop thinking about a harder question:

Where was fashion when Karen needed it?

One of the defining supermodels of the 1990s disappeared from the fashion system, and three decades later, we celebrate her return as though those years were simply a pause.

They werenโ€™t.

A Vogue cover can celebrate a comeback.
It cannot give someone their lost years back.

So yes, welcome back, Karen.
But perhaps fashion owes you more than a cover.

Born in Spain and trained as a tailor, Balenciaga approached fashion through cut, proportion, volume and architecture. His mastery of fabrics such as gazar allowed him to create some of the most sculptural silhouettes in 20th-century fashion.

Dior called him โ€œthe master of us all.โ€ Chanel regarded him as the only true couturier.

Even after closing his house in 1968, his influence continued right down to the clients he directed toward Hubert de Givenchy.

Before supermodel became a marketing label, models like Karen Mulder made it mean something.
Runways. Covers. Campaigns. Couture.
Mulder wasnโ€™t simply part of the โ€™90s supermodel era she helped define its image.

From Guess campaigns to major fashion covers, her face became instantly recognisable across the fashion world.

Three decades later, she is back in the fashion conversation.

But before the comeback, remember the career that made her Canon.

Before Instagram. Before digital fashion media. Before the fashion-magazine boom in India there was GLADRAGS.

And this 1997 issue is a little time capsule.

Aditi Govitrikar on the cover.
Inside: Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Linda Evangelista, Christie Turlington, Sharon Stone and Aishwarya Raiโ€”alongside Ritu Beri, Shahab Durazi, Arjun Khanna, Ralph Lauren and some extraordinary fashion photography.

What fascinates me isnโ€™t simply the nostalgia.

Itโ€™s seeing Indian fashion media at a moment when Indian designers, models, photographers and international fashion were beginning to occupy the same visual landscape.

And look at the cover:
โ€œIndian Collections.โ€
โ€œDuraziโ€™s Summer Whites.โ€
Ralph Lauren.

This was fashion publishing in India in 1997โ€”long before feeds, algorithms and digital archives.

The pages are literally falling apart.
But the fashion history inside them is still alive.

I collect fashion magazines. This is why.

Do you really need fashion school to succeed?

No.

But does succeeding without formal education mean education is unnecessary?

Also no.

Fashion school wonโ€™t make you a designer. You will.

But the right education can give you knowledge, exposure, critique, technique and a networkโ€”things that can take years to build on your own.

So what do you think?

Before World War II, Chanel had already transformed modern womenswear. But the war changed her standing in Paris. When she returned to couture in 1954, the French reception was far from warm.

Then America listened.

With support from fashion voices including Harperโ€™s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow, Chanelโ€™s signature suits and tweeds found a powerful audience across the Atlantic.

What Paris considered yesterdayโ€™s fashion, America saw as timeless.

She wasnโ€™t the first model. She was the first brand.

Before โ€œsupermodelโ€ meant anything, Cindy Crawford turned a face into an industry a multimillion-dollar Revlon deal, a place on nine Vogue covers in one shot, a name bigger than the clothes she wore.

Others walked the runway. She built the blueprint every model since has followed the covers, the contracts, the crossover into business.
