💻 Storage Types Explained (Laptop HDD vs Desktop HDD vs M.2 SATA SSD)

🔹 1. Laptop HDD (2.5” Hard Disk)
• Size: 2.5-inch (small & portable)
• Speed: Usually 5400RPM or 7200RPM
• Storage: 500GB – 2TB common
• Uses: Laptops, external drives
• Pros:
✔ Cheap storage
✔ Good for files, movies, backups
• Cons:
❌ Slow compared to SSD
❌ Has moving parts (can damage easily)

👉 Example: A typical laptop HDD is a 2.5-inch SATA drive used in most older laptops

🔹 2. Desktop HDD (3.5” Hard Disk)
• Size: 3.5-inch (bigger)
• Speed: 7200RPM (faster than laptop HDD)
• Storage: 1TB – 20TB+
• Uses: Desktop PCs, servers
• Pros:
✔ High capacity (best for large data)
✔ Better performance than laptop HDD
• Cons:
❌ Needs more power
❌ Not portable

👉 Desktop HDDs are physically larger and usually faster than laptop drives, offering more storage capacity

⚡ 3. M.2 SATA SSD
• Type: Solid State Drive (no moving parts)
• Shape: Small stick (M.2 form factor)
• Speed: Much faster than HDD
• Uses: Modern laptops & desktops
• Pros:
✔ Very fast boot & load times
✔ Low power usage
✔ Shock-resistant
• Cons:
❌ More expensive than HDD
❌ Lower capacity for same price

👉 SSDs are faster and more efficient because they don’t use spinning disks like HDDs

✅ Which one should you choose?
• 📂 For storage (movies, backups) → HDD
• 🚀 For speed (Windows, gaming) → SSD
• 🖥️ For large data (desktop users) → Desktop HDD

💡 Pro Tip:
Best setup = SSD (for OS) + HDD (for storage) 👍

💻 Desktop RAM Buying Guide (2026)

Looking to upgrade your PC performance? Choosing the right desktop RAM is important for speed and smooth multitasking. Here are the key things you should know 👇

🔹 RAM Types
• DDR2 - Old,Outdated,slow, cheep price
• DDR3 - common and affordable
• DDR4 – Most common and affordable
• DDR5 – Newer, faster, but more expensive

➡️ DDR4 is still widely used and offers good performance with lower power usage.

🔹 Capacity (How much RAM?)
• 8GB – Basic use (browsing, office work)
• 16GB – Best for gaming & multitasking
• 32GB+ – Heavy editing, design, professional work

🔹 Speed (MHz)
• 2666MHz – Standard
• 3200MHz – Best value
• 3600MHz+ – High performance

Higher speed RAM improves system responsiveness and performance.

🔹 Popular Brands
• Corsair
• Kingston
• Crucial
• TeamGroup

These brands are reliable and commonly available in Sri Lanka.

🔹 Price Idea (Sri Lanka)
• 8GB DDR4 ≈ Rs. 14,000 – 16,000
• 16GB DDR4 ≈ Rs. 20,000+

🔹 Tips Before Buying
✔ Check motherboard compatibility (DDR4 or DDR5)
✔ Use same RAM size & speed for best performance
✔ Dual-channel (2 sticks) is better than single

💾 30-Pin SIMM (Single In-line Memory Module) 💾

The 30-pin SIMM is an early type of computer memory used mainly in older PCs from the late 1980s to early 1990s.

🔹 What it is:
A small RAM module with 30 gold pins used to increase a computer’s memory.

🔹 Where it was used:
Common in early IBM-compatible PCs, 286, 386, and some 486 systems.

🔹 Speed & Capacity:
• Very low capacity by today’s standards (usually 256KB to 16MB per module)
• Much slower compared to modern RAM

🔹 Type:
• 8-bit or 32-bit memory (used in sets for full performance)

🔹 Why it matters:
It was one of the first widely used RAM standards before modern DIMMs replaced it.

⚠️ Today it is considered obsolete, but still important for vintage computer repair and restoration.
