New York Theatre Ballet "an invaluable company,” A. Macaulay (NYT 2010)
(266)

“New York Theatre ballet confirms its status as an invaluable company,” says Alastair Macaulay of the New York Times. (April 2010)

Founded by Diana Byer in 1978, NYTB performs traditional works by choreographers such as Ashton, Tudor and Robbins; is sought after by the heirs of Moderns such as Limón and Cunningham to correctly recreate their original works; and commissions significant, emerging

choreographers such as Alston, Bond, Tanowitz, Pelle and more. NYTB has self-produced at venues including Florence Gould Hall, Danspace Project, and New York Live Arts; and appeared at Carnegie Hall, NYC Center, Brookfield Place, 92Y and Schimmel Center. Touring venues have included Jacob’s Pillow, Kaatsbaan, Kirkland Performing Arts Center, WA, Johnny Carson Theatre, NE, Dixie Carter Theatre, TN and Colonial Theatre, NH. NYTB has earned national acclaim for its restoration and revival of small masterworks by great choreographers and for its innovative hour-long ballets based on children’s literature. Audiences know the Company for its theatrical expressiveness, high production quality, and intimate accessibility to every audience member.

NYTB mourns the passing of longtime friend Valda Setterfield. Valda always offered her support to the dancers, attending performances and offering words of wisdom when observing rehearsals. NYTB dancers had the honor to share the stage with her in David Gordon’s Live Archivography and THE MATTER @ MoMA, witnessing her phenomenal talent, a true artist in every sense of the word. We will fondly remember her friendship and the gifts she gave to the dance world.

Congratulations to Steven Melendez, the recently appointed artistic director of the New York Theatre Ballet, succeeding founder Diana Byer. The New York Theatre Ballet is coming to the The Colonial Theatre on Sunday, December 17th to perform the holiday classic, The Nutcracker!

From clockwork imps to a luminous owl that flies above the audience, mice dressed in polka dots and dancers dancing with huge chopsticks, this timeless, re-imagined classic bursts with energy and excitement. This holiday ballet, danced to Tchaikovsky’s beloved score, is set in Art Nouveau style circa 1907 with innovative choreography by long-time NYTB choreographer, Keith Michael; set design by Gillian Bradshaw-Smith; and costumes by Resident Costume Designer of the Metropolitan Opera, Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan.

Thank you Pasatiempo for this in-depth and brilliant feature on New York Theatre Ballet! There are still a few tickets left for their performance tonight (November 11) at 7:30 pm. We also hope you'll join us for Program Notes, a pre-performance talk with their Artistic Director Steven Melendez.

“The most important word to put next to our name is ‘accessible,’” says Melendez, who became artistic director in August. While Byer spent 44 years with the company, creating a place for children like Melendez to thrive, the new director says what is needed now is not just advocates like Byer, but representation."

LIFT went on to win the 2022 Children's Resilience in Film Award

Congratulations to LIFT (2022) directed by David J. Petersen and Beaufort 9 Films for being named the first-ever award recipient of Shine Global’s Children’s Resilience in Film Award and receiving a $25,000 unrestricted cash prize.

Filmed over the course of ten years, LIFT shines a spotlight on the invisible story of homelessness in America through the eyes of a group of young home-insecure ballet dancers enrolled in New York Theatre Ballet 's LIFT program, and the mentor who inspires them, internationally-renowned ballet dancer Steven Melendez.

Thank you to all of our partners, sponsors, and supporters for making our first award ceremony a success, and empowering the power of storytelling.
