Tomorrow we celebrate the life of Lorenzo Mans. Playwright, actor, translator, INTAR’s longtime literary manager, archivist, and tasked with the exceedingly difficult job of brokering communication between our founder Max and the artists. He was full of INTAR’s history, its artists, as well as most of the gossip of our theater. Never one to shy away from an opinion about EVERYTHING Lorenzo was possibly our toughest internal critic.

Feel free to join us tomorrow October 2nd at 7pm for some memories, reconnection, many laughs and of course tears.

We will forever continue to say goodbye to them through the retelling of our stories of them, their memories shall live on.

— Lou Moreno, Artistic Director.

We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and lighting connoisseur Doug Filomena.

Artistic Director Lou Moreno shares “From Rattlestick Playwrights Theater to Twilight Theater Company to INTAR, the Lighting Syndicate powered by this man, Doug Filomena, and his business partner and friend, Jake Hendricks, were the unsung heroes of off Broadway.

From my small little view of the theater world at large, they were a talented and reliable crew of bad asses that kept us little guys rocking and rolling with excellent work, service, and fun.

In fact INTAR would not have a theater today were it not for Doug who single handedly, with skill, guts, and courage, turned our lights on.

Rest in Power brother.

Leave the lights on.”

📸 Scenes from the block. INTAR’s humble lobby has now been transformed into what we call “the block”. Not only because of the homey vibes and all the nostalgic photos on the wall, but like a true latine communtiy, it is a place where people share laughs, tears, and a lot of hugs.

About the play

The Torres family of the Bronx are gathering at Juana's apartment to celebrate the christening of her grandson, Christopher. It's November 2002 and a year after 9/11, this hilarious, fun, close-knit Dominican family is navigating a new reality that challenges their sense of security-is America waging war in Iraq? When it's time to party, the Torres' still deliver - there's definitely too much food, adults harangue their kids a little, cousins gossip and argue - and yet the comforts of home fall short. Something is up.

This World Premiere of Julissa Contreras' new play features bilingual dialogue meticulously woven to show the beauty, humor, and uncertainty of a life in this time, place, and comunidad.

There is elevator access to the theatre on the 4th floor, however please be aware there are two small steps to enter the building...

For the last 50+ years INTAR Theatre has continued to challenge their artists and themselves to make sure that Latine theater makers secure their place in the US theater canon and beyond. Dynamic Programming like their MainStage, Unit 52, and The NewWorks Lab have proven invaluable resources to these artists giving them not only a place to be seen but a place to call home.

Our hearts are heavy with the loss of INTAR Theatre's longtime executive director John McCormack, who died from natural causes related to COVID-19.

"The loss of John McCormack is not just a loss for INTAR, but for the Off-Broadway theatre community as well," said Artistic Lou Moreno. "He was a living history of Off-Broadway. There was scarcely a name or a play he did not have intimate knowledge of and that perspective is what kept our offices full of chatter and laughter. INTAR lost the Executive Director with the longest term in our history. Our community lost a kind and generous soul. And Off-Broadway lost its biggest champion and fan."
Rehearsals are underway for TO THE BONE, our final mainstage of the season, co-produced with INTAR Theatre. Thank you to playwright Lisa Ramirez for visiting the rehearsal room and sharing your brilliance!
