Cori Teague is our newest recruit! She joins the team as Fair Director of Affordable Art Fair Austin which launches in 2024. To get to know her a little better, we sat down to discuss her favorite artwork purchase - a 'beautifully chaotic' painting called “A little twisted but never lonely” by artist duo, " .

Next up in our series is Carl Wilhelm Hirsch who has expertly overseen our Stockholm fair as Director for the last three years. He talks us through his favorite art fair purchase - a duo of etchings on Japanese paper, purchased from the Stockholm fair in 2022.
"Looking at art that I have bought through the years works as a reminder for me of who I was at the time, what I was going through, and helps me remember and relate to my past. I rarely buy a piece because it would fit in, on the contrary, I want my pieces to stand out."

Next up in our series is Georgia Huestis, Fair Director of Affordable Art Fair Melbourne.
Georgia has picked up a few pieces from fairs over the years, but pride of place in her kitchen is a screenprint of a giant melon by Melbourne based artist, Alice Oehr. Georgia adores the simplicity of the two colours and the effortless line work. "The rock melon looks to be having a happy hug with the pink wrapping and it always makes me smile."
Alice's work was exhibited in our Discover: Young Talent exhibition at our Melbourne fair in 2019. We love that we're able to support emerging artists and connect them with art lovers all over the world.

"In my day-to-day role, I spend a lot of time carefully considering artists’ techniques, backgrounds and exhibitor suitability for our fairs. However, when it comes to buying art for myself, I’m completely impulsive."

Collective Highlight | Jackson Pensa Price
This trio of independent, Australian artists consists of Kirsten Jackson, Mia Pensa and Anna Price. Despite their unique artist perspectives, their work has one thing in common: heaps of color.
Jackson’s abstracts are off-the-scale expressive. Pensa creates warm, jungle-inspired paintings, and Price beautifully balances color and shape with a hint of cubism. Together, they make a cohesive group.
Thanks to the team, we managed to get a glimpse into their studios. The Sydney fair opens this week, so we’re wishing the best of luck to all our friends in Australia ✨

The theme for this year’s UN is all about finding solutions to plastic pollution, so we thought it's the perfect time to highlight the work of Alessandro Gerull, an Italian artist who turns waste objects into contemporary sculpture ♻️ ✨
Made from found, recycled materials, you can spot everything from toothpaste tubes to old vacuum cleaner parts.
He feels an inherent need to repurpose waste items into new, beautiful objects. This empathetic approach gives proper character to his creations. The final inspiration for color comes while he meticulously layers his objects. It’s an impulsive decision that he believes gives soul to the sculptural forms.
We love to see artists working with uncommon materials, and especially when they’re given a renewed power.

Introducing the final artist highlight for our Women’s History Month campaign!
Erika Stearly makes paintings of the spaces where people live. Inspired by vintage home remodelling, magazines and friend's houses, her paintings tell a story of everyday life.
Despite being loosely rendered, exaggerated and often brightly colored, the collection of domestic items depicted still manage to evoke the sense of a particular place.
Stearly's paintings are often titled by street address or named after the people who live there. The fluidity between abstraction and representation creates a unique feeling of nostalgia.
Supporting female artists at our fair is hugely important to the Affordable Art Fair ethos. Make sure to head to JJ Galloway Studio’s stand to fall in love with Erika’s work.

The chain-link fence is ever-present in Francisco’s body of work having taken on new meaning as a consequence of the current and ongoing deluge of photographs of detention centers and people in cages – “What was once a quotidian marker of urban life now sends chills down my spine.” Acting as a seemingly transparent barrier, it allows for the violence and pain inflicted on children and families caught behind the fence of immigration detention centers to be kept in and obscured. . Francisco’s technique ultimately showcases a balancing act between exposing and cauterizing. By creating playful and seductive abstract works saturated with color, movement and form, it’s not until you’re up close to the large-scale piece that you realize you’re looking at an overall chain-link fence pattern and confronted with the heaviness that it represents. . Through his gestural and often meditative practice, Francisco is able to not only process his own experiences as an undocumented person in the US, but also allows for a rebirth and retelling of migration narratives in which barriers are overcome. . At the heart of “Playground” will live the incredible mural titled “Homegrown”, consisting of 7 mylar panels installed together and measuring up to 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide. . Francisco describes the ‘playground’ as a, “site for belonging, for expression, for that inner child to exist, to play, to be curious, to feel, a site of possibility, to question, to experiment, to be, to learn, to explore. The playground is a form of altermundo. The playground is also a site of surveillance, witness, and paranoia where children are watched by their parents and guardians, surveilled, kept, and sometimes an ominous site of imaginary loss and violence. To be in a playground evokes memories of childhood, which are mixed memories of happiness, innocence and play, but also traumas, loss and isolation.” . In Playground, the use of the mundane and repressive chain-link fence becomes a colorful and dynamic organism imbued with life and feeling. Francisco’s intricate patterns are created through the use of hand drawn and repurposed stencils from previous works and various projects around his studio. . The installation titled “Playground” is a collection of new works where Francisco explores themes of movement, place and belonging, using the “playground” as an allegory to represent the polarizing feelings of curiosity and nostalgia, as well as a site of surveillance and trauma. . “I’ve gone through a lot of emotions making this work in the best way. I’ve learned a ton in the process like what the work is about, how to use the fence, what I’m trying to say. They feel like very personal breakthroughs for me, which is incredible because it is such a pressure cooker of an experience. The years I’ve lived have prepared me to make this work, and while it’s a new body of work it’s not new at all. There’s something about this that feels very familiar and very intuitive.” . Throughout the creation process, Francisco found inspiration listening to a hybrid of funk, disco and pop in Spanish that was very upbeat and colorful as well as podcasts and artist interviews like TalkArt, @ArtfromtheOutsidePodcast and The Art People Podcast . 4/6 #InstagramTakeover with @cindyshaoul from @lilacgallerynyc . “Oil paint is the main medium I use, and lots of it. I love to create pieces with layers upon layers of oil paint, then at times topped with gold and silver textures. Gold and silver leaf used sparingly along with broken pieces of glass as well are mainly used in my “Dripping Dots.” The “My Hearts” are created using a pallet knife at first, gliding on the oil paints in thick chunks. Then I let it rain with gold or silver mixed media paint, letting the droplets of mixed media hit the oil paint throughout the canvas. I then take a special “fan” brush and lightly drag the mixed media paint over the oils from top to bottom and it creates this very interesting texture. Almost like rock formations out of the Grand Canyon, except in bright oil paint and gold and silver. Then when the paints dry for a few days, I take a large brush and paint in the “My Heart” with thick white oils.” .
