The name draws from pataphysics, which was defined by French symbolist writer Alfred Jarry as a branch of philosophy that examines imaginary phenomena beyond metaphysics. PATAFEST uses the absurd as a methodology for deconstructing assumptions, questioning the status quo, and reconfiguring language to be more diversified and encouraging of more complex discourses. The festival brings together a variety of art formats including performance, music, literature, dance, cinema, cabaret, theater, and exhibitions. At the core is an interest in our animal nature, an anti-anthropomorphic perspective, and the political in our societal existence, prioritizing philosophical explorations. As the caravan of a circus, PATAFEST intends to be perpetually on the move and revolve around a multi-perspectival scope, exploring notions of translation, crossing of disciplines, and nonsensical discontinuity. In the midst of the chaos of our time, chance can manifest itself within the flexible structure of PATAFEST. The logo of the festival borrows from the imagery of the Bremen Town Musicians, a tale by the Grimm Brothers. In this story, a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster, all too old to execute their tasks in their respective farms, set out to escape death. Their plan is to become town musicians in Bremen. They never reach the city, but together do manage to claim a new home for themselves.
