The year 2025 was a significant and critical one for My Balkans’ identity, achievements and the wide-ranging impact of its work across the Balkans and in the United States. It was also a difficult and challenging year, given the state of the global world order and everyday emerging crisis that shaped and produced domino effects on the state of affairs in the countries, areas and communities where we have been successfully active in the past. Adhering closely to our multifold mission to develop and fund projects, programs, and activities; to raise social awareness; to build relationships and alliances with individuals and various organizations around the globe; and to support societies committed to justice and equality, My Balkans organized, produced and was part of numerous events both in Europe and the U.S., with its important role of promoting freedom of expression, social openness and artistic excellence. On Thursday at La MaMa, we screened Zoran Đinđić, author’s project by Oliver Frljić.

The play deals with the issue of guilt and trauma in society following the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić of Serbia in 2003. This significant and brutal historical moment served as a point of departure for the artists, led by author Oliver Frljić, to question collective consciousness and the responsibility of the entire community. It also raises the issue of artistic responsibility in communicating with the audience on topics that transform and define our individual participation in the life of that very same community. Among many awards, the production won the Mira Trailović Grand Prix at the 47th BITEF Festival.

Screened on December 13, 2025 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre lobby, .

Produced by Theatre Atelje 212, Belgrade, Serbia

In this moment, we feel it is our responsibility to defend the values of Bitef - artistic freedom, critical thinking, integrity, and solidarity.

U ovom trenutku, osećamo da je naša dužnost da odbranimo boje Bitefa - slobodu umetničkog izraza, kritičko mišjenje, integritet, zajedništo.

From The Other Side, My Balkans i LaMama stoje uze Bitef!

Last night’s performance of Things That Burn Easily concluded with a discussion featuring the actors Hrvojka Begović, Lea Jevtić, and Vladimir Aleksić, and writer/director Vedrana Klepica, moderated by Dimitrije Kokanov.

Things That Burn Easily continues today and tomorrow at 4:00 pm at Ellen Stewart Theatre, La MaMa.

Running time: 1h 15’
Performance language: Croatian with English subtitles

Things That Burn Easily is a contemplative dystopia about a family living on a modest piece of land after a catastrophe. One part of the family believes an irreparable injustice has been committed and that a system of responsibility and compensation must exist. The other is deeply sceptical, shaping a worldview in which every individual is a potential threat and isolation becomes the only certainty. When a new danger appears on the horizon, these opposing principles collide in an unbearable misunderstanding.

From The Other Side featured in New York Times’s Off-Broadway Roundup

“Reimagining Theater From the Balkans, Edition 1.0” is the subtitle of this multifaceted series of events. This weekend’s featured production, performed with English supertitles, is Vedrana Klepica’s “Things That Burn Easily,” about a family whose land has been affected by a catas-trophe, and about alienation and interconnection as responses to a fragmented world. Play readings (in English), video screenings (with subtitles) and round-table discussions (in English) are also on the program. (Through Sunday;

Snapshots from last night’s premiere: Things That Burn Easily, open through Sunday

Things That Burn Easily is a contemplative dystopia about a family living on a modest piece of land affected by a catastrophe. Part of the family believes that they have been wronged by irreparable injustice and that a system that will take responsibility and compensate for some of the consequences of it should exist. The other part is sceptical and has modelled for themselves a vision of the world in which every other individual is a potential threat, and the only reliable certainty comes from social isolation. When a big new threat appears on the horizon, it will trigger an unbearable misunderstanding of these two principles.
