Founded in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of America’s most prominent flamenco companies.

Our mission is to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage, produce and perform high quality dance works, and provide arts education programs that catalyze connections among young people, while nurturing the new generations of Spanish dance artists and educators. We believe that the universal spirit of flamenco – with diverse influences from Arab, Jewish, Gitano, Spanish, African and Latin American cultures – gives this art form a unique power to build bridges between people.

🌟MEET THE FLAMENCO CERTAMEN USA 2026 ESTUDIO FINALISTS!🌟

Rie Katayama is a choreographer and artistic director of Flamenco Cerezo/Expresivo in Chicago, a role she has held since 2015. Born in Japan, she began studying flamenco 25 years ago and additional training background in rhythmic gymnastics, modern dance, and lyrical dance. Her mentors include Melody Vasquez, Wendy Clinard, Chiara Mangiameli, and Claudia Pizarro in Chicago, as well as Paloma Gomez, David Romero, Adi Movdat, and Miguel Vargas in Spain and online. In 2016, she performed in the opening program of Festival Flamenco Alburquerque. She regularly performs with La Mar de Bien and with Casa Triana across Chicago and beyond.

Oya Dela Osa () is a San Diego–based flamenco artist who has been studying flamenco for almost five years. She began her flamenco training at Flamenco Sur under Carlos Villatoro and continues to study there under Makiko Sanchez and Julie McGee while seeking opportunities to learn from other flamenco artists through workshops and performances. Oya has performed in tablaos, theatres, festivals, and private events. As an artist, she is drawn to the collaborative nature of flamenco and is continually inspired by the connection shared between artists in the cuadro. She hopes to study in Spain while continuing to deepen her understanding of flamenco.

Michelle Hancock is an emerging flamenco dancer based in Santa Cruz, California. She has fully immersed herself in the tradition of authentic flamenco for over a decade, and has trained with many renowned flamenco artists based locally in the greater Bay Area as well as direct from Spain. She performs regularly in both group and solo capacity in Santa Cruz as well as San Francisco.

🌟MEET THE FLAMENCO CERTAMEN USA 2026 ESTUDIO FINALISTS!🌟

Dana Bricken () took her first dance class when she was four years old and studied ballet, pointe, jazz, and modern as a child and adolescent. Seeing Riverdance at Radio City Music Hall at a young, impressionable age piqued her interest in percussive dance styles, and she had a "love at first sight" moment after taking her first flamenco class at age thirteen. She has studied with a variety of teachers in both New York City and Spain, and has performed in over a dozen student shows. Most recently, she was invited to participate in the Hunter College dance showcase and performed her first baile solo.

En Comunidad comes to Socrates Sculpture Park with an immersive flamenco walking tour, presented by Flamenco Latino and Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana.

Longtime Queens resident and beloved flamenco elder Aurora Reyes leads us through the history of flamenco in NYC and Queens, among the park’s large-scale art installations. Along the way, local flamencos of all ages and our Guest Artistic Director Karen Lugo perform in dialogue with the art and the landscape.

Come ready to clap, sing, and dance juntos. 👏🏽

Sarah Ward (.co) is a flamenco dancer, educator, and somatic embodiment coach with over 20 years of dedicated study. Based in Albuquerque, she trains at the National Institute of Flamenco under Carlos Menchaca, and Elena Osuna. She performs as a soloist with Spanish Broom, at the Tablao at Hotel Albuquerque and El Farol, and created Moda Flamenca and Caras de Flamenco, original showcases spotlighting local artists. Sarah also teaches flamenco to underserved children with a National Institute of Flamenco residency in partnership with the Department of Health. For her, flamenco is a practice of embodied presence and unapologetic self-expression.

Jaime "Timmy" Gonzalez () began training in flamenco and classical Spanish dance in Mexico in 2011, performing as Escamillo in "Carmen" with Tauro Flamenco. He moved to Jalisco in 2017 to join "Las Cabales" and relocated to Montreal in 2022, where he began teaching at "La Otra Orilla." Throughout his career, Timmy has trained with renowned Mexican, Canadian, and Spanish teachers, specializing in flamenco accessories. In 2024, he participated in the "Paso a Paso" mentorship, studied at Madrid's "Amor de Dios" studios, and co-founded the flamenco group Encuentro.

🌟MEET THE FLAMENCO CERTAMEN USA 2026 TABLAO FINALISTS!🌟

Susana Lorenzo (.lorenzo.wdc) a Flamenco Vivo Certamen finalist in 2023, 2024, and prize winner in 2025, began her flamenco studies in the United States with Susana di Palma, Jose Molina and Luis Montero, and at Spain’s Amor de Dios with Maria Magdalena, Maruja Palacios, El Guito, and Rafaela Carrasco, among others. She danced with the Ramon de los Reyes Spanish Dance Theater, the Jose Greco Dance Company, the Spanish Dance Society, and in Zarzuelas under Goyo Montero with the Washington Opera. After a break of two decades, Susana is following her dream to return to flamenco. She studies at the Fundación Cristina Heeren in Sevilla.

🌟MEET THE FLAMENCO CERTAMEN USA 2026 TABLAO FINALISTS!🌟

Qi Yang () Born in Guangzhou, China, trained in classical ballet for twelve years before discovering flamenco in adulthood. She began her flamenco studies under Ryan Zemeño and Alex Rozo in 2016, and since 2018 has pursued intensive training at festivals across the field. In 2023, she earned First Prize at the Estudio level at Flamenco Certamen USA. In 2025, she joined Blackbird Dance Company under Aliesha Bryan for the production At the Piano. Qi travels to Spain annually for intensive training, continuing to develop her path as a Tablao soloist under the mentorship of Xianix Barrera.
