FASHION OR ART?
In America, the purpose of fashion is entertainment and entertainment involves a scientific catalog of predictabilities that have a history of response from a user set (consumers). Aesthetics, (the study of patterning), is a prior to fine art but Art always requires the unique exploration of the values in a perceptual medium as a one of a kind product.

The moment it becomes derivative or predictable it leaves Art and become craft or more accurately a generic science. The science of generics like a Disney movie or today's TV dramas, has a specific set of formulaic rules that target audiences and confirm each other.

It is that confirmation mixed with a mild amount of surprise that is the foundation of commercial art and entertainment.

In all Fine Art there is the problem of complexity. That problem is that the concept of "complexity" is a two edged sword in definition. The root of the word is "to braid" which indicates layering but when applied to human activity and skills the diminution of complexity means that you are able to handle more, not less. To diminish complexity in Art the performer has to practice until understood and natural while the audience must listen multiple times carefully until they have a familiarity that allows prediction.

Nothing is complex if you know HOW to do it. For those who know their art there is always a difference between a replica and a one of kind serious art product. Sometimes they ascribe that to the realm of spirit but in reality it is the realm of understanding and familiarity.

During my time serving at Fort Myer, Arlington Cemetery, the Pentagon, and the White House—with a top-secret security clearance—it was clear to me, even during the turbulent Nixon years, how fragile our democracy can be. The "Cowboys" we see today come from Western movies and the myths spun for entertainment and profit. These images have little to do with the courage and sacrifice of my uncle, who flew 32 missions over Germany in the 8th Air Force, or the other military members in my family. Now, consider what our government might become if Trump's inadequate grasp of democracy prevails for one or two elections. Good songs for a Monday morning in Nuyagi. These come by way of Dr. Charlotte Heth who taught Native Music at UCLA and was a old classmate of mine at Tulsa University under Maestro Louis Cunningham. She was a wonderful soprano. I still remember her singing Turandot's big first act aria. Not bad for a Cherokee soprano. She has done significant things with her life.
