THE FLAT is a boutique art space modeled to resemble a real home in its dedication to unifying handmade art, furniture, textiles and objects of beauty & thought from authentic origins. Eclectic, globally handpicked collectibles comprise the several room-like vignettes in this shophouse under a single experience—bridging art, craft and installation in a passionate investigation into cultural output

of upmost integrity from past and present generations. Kiwha Lee Blocman is a visual artist trained in both fine art and design from Columbia University in NYC, UNSW Art & Design and the University of Technology, Sydney. In her shophouse, she offers a true-to-life proposition that treats furniture, art and objects on an equal "collect-worthy" footing within a space. IKEA hopes the project will show the world that there is an explosion of creativity coming out of Africa right now.

"They were quite interested in what was rising from the ground here in Africa. They wanted to capture this in some way, and asked if we could possibly assist with finding some great people of Africa who could be most representative of this spirit."

"We actually picked good thinkers. We just went across and found people who are really getting out there, taking risks and expressing themselves, and who represented the best of the African creative garde."

A chair that is "perfect for hacking" and baskets made from faux hair braids are among the products created by African designers for a new IKEA homeware range.
