Step into a world of unconventional love and thought-provoking emotions with YOURS UNFAITHFULLY, the un-romantic comedy by Miles Malleson that delves into the price of free love. This exceptional peek behind the closed doors of an open marriage officially opened in the West End July 1st! Book your tickets for this intimate co-production with Jermyn Street Theatre: http://ow.ly/2RNp50OF4o2 🎟️

Set in the 1930s Yours Unfaithfully takes you behind the closed doors of what we may call an open marriage 💍

Did you know the term open marriage wasn’t actually coined until the 1960s?

The idea of an open marriage was popularised by the 1972 book by Nena and George O'Neill 💑

Their best-selling book laid out an open marriage as one where each partner has room for personal growth

The book made way for a sexual revolution in the 70s

Before then, open relationships were not so openly discussed, making Yours Unfaithfully rather ahead of the curve

So what made playwright Miles Malleson want to write about this topic? 🖊

Inspiration came from home - he was in an open marriage with Lady Constance Malleson between 1915 and 1923

Constance was also in a relationship with intellectual Bertrand Russell 💞

So, don't miss Yours Unfaithfully, an interwar story of a rather unconventional couple

We're excited to shine the spotlight on our incredible in-person productions that have captivated audiences and brought lost and forgotten plays back to life. Here's a glimpse of what we've been up to:

⛓️ CHAINS: Delves into profound themes of love, ambition, and societal constraints. We journeyed through Elizabeth Baker's gripping story exploring the complexities of human relationships and the struggle for personal freedom.

🖋️ THE RAT TRAP: We staged this thrilling and suspenseful Noel Coward play that kept audiences on the edge of their seats. With stellar performances and a gripping narrative, THE RAT TRAP reminded us why we fell in love with the theater in the first place.

💃🏻 BECOMES A WOMAN: We boldly presented the World Premiere of Betty Smith's BECOMES A WOMAN, a play written in 1930 but never before seen. This extraordinary production featured a talented cast of 15 actors, stunning costumes, and mesmerizing lights. It was a production to remember!

The MINT THEATER COMPANY finds and produces worthwhile plays from the past that have been lost or forgotten. They create new life for these plays and their authors through research, dramaturgy, production, readings, and a variety of enrichment programs. Their live theater is currently running Britt Berke’s BECOMES A WOMAN by Betty Smith.

Some of these professional, live plays were filmed, and have been streamed for FREE by the Mint theater, most notably during the COVID shut down, when so many of us were shut off from the world of art because of sheltering at home. The Mint is continuing their generous and noble tradition by currently streaming two more of their fabulous productions.

For one more day—today—audiences all over the planet can enjoy the Mint’s 2013 production of George Kelly’s 1931 comedy, PHILIP GOES FORTH, directed by Jerry Ruiz, starring Cliff Bemis, Teddy Bergman, Bernardo Cubría, Jennifer Harmon / Kathryn Kates, Carole Healey, Christine Toy Johnson, Natalie Kuhn, Brian Keith MacDonald, Jennifer McVey, and Rachel Moulton.

PHILIP GOES FORTH tells the story of a young man who rebels against his father and a career in the family business, and ventures to New York to write plays. He leaves home without his father’s support or blessing, but with this warning: “Don’t imagine, whenever you get tired floating around up there in the clouds, that you can drop right back into your place down here—that isn’t the way things go.”

The story is highly relevant to anyone who’s ever been at a crossroads, in a quandary about what to do with their life. This is especially true for those considering the adventure of a dive into the deep end of the arts. Phillip hears a lot of voices, some egging him on to pursue his dreams full tilt, others imploring him not to quit his day job. Does Phillip have the talent, passion, and stick-to-it-iveness to make a dream come true that might take months, or even years? Though they may love him, some of those advising him do so for their own reasons—who does he listen to? Moreover, that voice that he hears inside—is it his heart, or his pride?

Viewers will enjoy the fabulous staging and skillful cast, as well as Ruiz’s directing, which enlivens the comedy and drama with an engaging brisk pace. Whether you’re a young person standing at life’s crossroads, or can simply remember when the road not traveled seemed as scary as a life spent by-the-numbers, you’ll be enthralled by this engaging play and it’s universal coming of age theme. For a comedy, this play is a surprisingly sober and truthful experience.

You can also enjoy the accompanying ENRICHMENT VIDEOS, including talks by FOSTER HIRSCH, author of GEORGE KELLY—A CRITICAL BIOGRAPHY IN TWAYNE'S UNITED STATES; and
MARK CALDWELL, Senior Professor of English, Fordham University.

Lillian Hellman's DAYS TO COME is also streaming, for FREE, NOW, On Demand, at MINTTHEATER.ORG through April 2, 2023. Donations help make these free streamings possible, and are warmly welcome.

Happy Women's History Month! Today, we're celebrating the remarkable play BECOMES A WOMAN by Betty Smith, which was never published during her lifetime, likely because it was considered too socially transgressive for its time. Now we have the rare opportunity to hear the powerful words of this pioneering woman playwright.

BECOMES A WOMAN follows a young working-class woman who creates opportunities out of obstacles. Through her struggles and triumphs, we see the resilience and strength of women in the face of adversity. Its message is just as relevant today as when it was written.

This Women's History Month, we honor the legacy of Betty Smith and all other women whose voices have been silenced throughout history and celebrate the progress we've made while recognizing the work that still needs to be done.

The New Yorker raved BECOMES A WOMAN is a "rare play that can inspire applause from a line of dialogue and cheers as the lights go down on the final act, odder still for one getting its world première nearly a century after it was written. But that’s what’s happening at the Mint’s production of this remarkable 1931 drama by Betty Smith, the author of the novel “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” directed by Britt Berke.

Much of the cheering is for Emma Pfitzer Price who is truly outstanding, in her Off Broadway début, as Francie Nolan, who undergoes the transformation of the title. But the acclaim is also for the work itself, which has laughs, music, emotion, melodrama, and feminist social insight," Ken Marks.

I submitted two posts earlier today. Both have since been deleted. Please inform me why that happened.
Lord Bollingdon points a gun at Tom who has broken into his home. Tom becomes submissive immediately. After Tom leaves Bollingdon becomes aware that his gun is empty ... and would have been ineffectual at stopping Tom if he had intended to resort to violence for his purpose.

Does this encounter somehow comment on the debate they engage in over political issues? The rise of the Labor Party and its demands for a redistribution of wealth?
Is Tom a "Peeping Tom".

When Dare prepares to leave after her unexpected visit with Tom in his room (sitting room, bedroom or whatever) he requests a kiss. She allows it. Then she considers perhaps staying the night. He confesses that if she does he will then want to make love to her.

We may have been surprised by his response. This would appear to be a big progression from the submissiveness and lack of confidence he had shown a couple of years earlier in the presence of her father Lord Bellingdon and Ronnie when he was the unexpected person in the room. What has emboldened him?

Tom had been prowling around on the terrace of the Bellingdon house for several hours that night before he allowed himself in unseen. All that time Dare and Ronnie were on the couch together after having returned from an evening out.

We see them in the opening scene as Ronnie is preparing to leave. Dare is without her shoes. Her legs extended across his lap. His tie is unknotted and shirt is opened at the collar. An image of two people who are relaxed and very comfortable with each other. What kind of activity between them had Tom witnessed during those several hours?

In the final scene Bollingdon summons Tom to the house. Dare and Ronnie are there when he arrives. When the conversation becomes heated Bollingdon threatens to reveal information which may be damaging to Tom's chance of winning his election. Dare warns that she will counter by making public that she and Ronnie have been intimate for several years. Is this news to Tom? Had he already learned this from what he saw when he peeked through the window on that prior night?

Tom reacts as though he did not. He treats it as disappointing news and renounces her. Concedes that her revelation establishes for him that Ronnie is her man.

Did Tom feel he needed to cover for himself? Avoid suspicion that he had observed an earlier example of intimate proceedings between Dare and Ronnie?

Did what he may have seen that evening encourage him to believe Dare might be receptive to his sexual advances the night she visited him?
The Mint has been a Manhattan treasure for years, for Alan and me one of our favorite places to go to see plays we always enjoyed.

We saw The Suitcase Under the Bed last night and thought it was wonderful. Terrific performances, excellent design elements, and smart direction. This was my first exposure to Deevy, and she is a wonderful playwright with a clear voice. Kudos to The Mint.
Saw The Lucky One last night. Really enjoyed seeing Michael Frederic again. He is such a wonderful character actor. Robert David Grant was just excellent as Gerard. Kudos!
