This Week At The Tank:

Mi Abuela, Queen of Nightmares
A Tank Core Production

Originating from a book of poetry, Mi Abuela, Queen of Nightmares is a memory play about how Maya, a young Salvadoran-American woman, navigates trauma and family mythology through magic and folklore as she comes of age in Phoenix, Arizona. Her story explores mother-daughter relationships, mixed race identity, being the child of an immigrant, growing up without a father, and using fantasy as a coping mechanism. Owls, jaguars, and cacti also make dream-like and delightful appearances.

BRANKO MILISKOVIĆ: LUST

Lust is a psychological force producing intense desire for something, or circumstance while already having a significant amount of the desired object. Lust can take any form such as the lust for sexuality (libido), money, or power.

In a black box theatre, surrounded by the audience, Serbian artist Branko Milisković performs an erotic dreamy situation in which the body touches, feels and smears itself, supported by the mesmerising sound piece of the same title, produced for the radio back in 2021, adjusted for this performance. The viewer is drawn into the scene as a vo**ur, witnessing the image of seduction and pure pleasure of self delusion. The smooth body that radiates and mediates between the conscience and the primitive desires, becomes a fetishised object, a symbol of sexual desire that is self-stimulating, but also as a political body, a symbol of manipulation, greed, power and crime.

CW: Graphic Nudity

Nyad’s Dream thematically resides at the intersection of q***rness, identity, environmentalism, and magic. It poses the question of are we a collection of our pasts or are we part of the divine spark in the universe? Identity is further explored in casting, as all characters are textually q***r and represent the ordinary grace of the rainbow family, it showcases there are many valid answers to the question of how to live.

A young princess, Sita, prepares for her impending nuptials. A young man, Ram, passes Sita's father's test and wins her hand in marriage. She follows him to his kingdom in Ayodhya, but soon after they arrive, he is banished to the forest for fourteen years. She refuses to abandon her husband, so she follows him into the forest, only to be captured by a demon, Ravan. After she is rescued by her husband, she is forced to undergo a test to prove that she was faithful to him during her capture. And even after she proves her purity, she is yet again banished to the forest - this time pregnant and alone. Eventually, she is reunited with her husband, but she realizes she has no desire for this partnership. She chooses to move on by herself, and plunges into the earth from whence she came.

All 12 characters are performed by one actor. It is an adaptation of the hindu epic, The Ramayana, from Ram's wife, Sita's perspective. The Ramayana is one of the most important literary works in South Asian and Hindu culture, traditionally shared with children on Hindu holidays to teach loyalty and goodness.

While our contemporary gaze can recognize the patriarchal dominance in the ancient source text and in contemporary South Asian culture at large, our production makes a space to open dialogue to unpack these issues in our American context. Our telling of this story gives a voice to, and reasserts the power and humanity of Sita, widely known as a Hindu goddess incarnate and deemed to be The Ideal Woman.

THIS WEEK AT THE TANK (PART 2):

TRIPLE BILL: DonkeyShowMe, The Horrors, Meow

DonkeyShowMe is a cautionary tale/riff on the Midsummer Night's Story about a man who dreams of becoming a donkey. The House of Dreams and its reigning queen Tatiana may just have the power to make it happen. But at what price?

The Horrors, is a ghost story about Someone coming to terms with their past and learning to love themself as they return to the house they built to say goodbye.

MEOW! is an experimental drag collage about the materials we worship, pastiching Americana with trends in contemporary spiritualism. Two brain-fried oracles, Crisis and Kristina, take to the beaches and ruins of the Grey Gardens estate, seeking meaning in the trash-heap of modern life.

TRIPLE BILL: The Frightening Door, Clearly or Darkly, and Imagined Mishap

The Frightening Door is the record of a resonance and a friendship between two lives, one of which ends. This play shares all the words between the playwright Victoria Provost and her friend in the last year of his life, as they candidly discuss mental illness and the struggle to stay connected in the drifting currents of adult life. The play flows between their texts, the writer's present thoughts, music, and dialogue.

A dancer’s duet with herself in-between physical and virtual space. Blurring the boundaries of her body, she creates feedback loops of witnessing, reacting, and responding to her extended embodied presence.

An ex turns up at your door, years after your relationship ended in disaster. You have to wonder, how?! And more importantly, why?! Rational explanations elude you, so you resort to imaginary tall tales. The movement vocabulary of bharatanatyam will be used to explore this story.

DOUBLE BILL: What Have We Done?; Encounters of a Washed-Up World

Human kind’s overuse of plastic has caused the 'substance to consume Earth. What kind of creature can survive in this new landscape? Can anything survive?
