Thicket & Thistle

Thicket & Thistle Thicket & Thistle is a NYC writing team of actor-musicians who write, perform in and provide the live orchestrations for their own original musicals.

Thicket & Thistle is a group of multidisciplinary actor-musicians who utilize collaborative writing to develop engaging new theatre. Our process fuses the traditional mediums of theatre and music in nontraditional ways to create original performances. Our musical theatre for the young at heart aims to provide an experience that uplifts, entertains, and engages. Thicket & Thistle is made up of Kyle

Acheson, Sam De Roest, Jonathan Eric Foster, Joshua Stenseth, Juliana Wheeler, and Lindsay Zaroogian. It was founded as a devising group of actor-musicians, blurring the lines between writer, performer, and orchestra. We share in every aspect and responsibility of the creative process. We have collaboratively written and produced 3 full length musicals and 3 short one-act musicals. Our flagship show, What’s Your Wish?, appeared in the NY International Fringe Festival (2015) and New York Musical Festival (2018) and also had a New York City run produced by Theatre Now New York (2017). We were granted a residency at the Access Theatre in 2017-2018 to work on our musical, Death Cruise. We received a NYSCA award to produce a run of that show in the summer of 2019 at Access Theatre. We have been part of the Theatre Now New York’s musical theatre writing lab for 2 years where we reworked The Waterman, which is scheduled to be performed in September of 2021 at The Players Theatre. We are also developing a movie musical, Grapes of Rad, in collaboration with The Barn in Los Angeles.

Question: are we the luckiest scrappy little theatre company in the world? It’s easy to feel gloomy about the past couple of years, but looking back at Thicket and Thistle’s 2021, we can’t help feeling extremely grateful!

Let’s take stock:
We’ve got the Thicket and Thistle Podcast, an opportunity to stay creative, watch so many classic movie musicals, and talk and laugh about art with the people we love most, all from different spots across the US. (Like and subscribe now, available on Spotify, Apple podcasts, and anywhere else you get your podcasts! 😜)

We’ve been developing a brand new movie musical script with the amazing fellows of The Barn, which we are SO excited to continue working on.

We had the IMMENSE privilege of performing our original musical Waterman in New York City this fall, which gave us the opportunity to work with so many amazingly talented people, on stage, in the pit, and in the booth!

All in all, we had a wonderful year, and are so lucky to get to work with so many wonderful individuals! So let’s make 2022 our best year yet! If there is one the thing the past two years has taught us, it’s that no matter what happens WE CAN MAKE IT WORK!

Stay creating all you thistles out there! And thank you for your continuing love and support!

Sondheim spoke to the artist inside all of us. His work stands as an invitation to all artists, to go deeper, to look closer, to give voice to the unique humanity of every character. From the giants in the sky to the ladies who lunch, here's to you, Sondheim. Thank you for the music, and rest easy. ❤️
