I must have spent at least twenty minutes trying to find a good position to capture these Crepidotus cinnabarinus gills, as they were absolutely beautiful, and it was my first time ever finding them. I can’t say I am super pleased with any of the photos, but they show one of the coolest features: the red marginate gills!

These strange, squiggly cotton-tipped wires growing out of a small twig were likely an anamorph, an asexual stage of fungi (usually Ascomycetes) that produces asexual spores (conidia). I talk about this sweet mushroom in the past tense, because as I was photographing an awesome red Crepidotus (coming up soon), I had my mushroom box open sitting about two feet away from me. Unbeknownst to me, my next step would be onto one end of a stick of which the other end was under my box. Mushrooms achieved flight that day…
