We mourn the loss and celebrate the life of Ruby Duncan (1932–2026), a fearless force for economic justice and the heart of WMM release STORMING CAESARS PALACE (dir. Hazel Gurland-Pooler). A leader of the Las Vegas Welfare Rights Movement, Ruby organized mothers to demand dignity, led the 1971 protest that shook the Strip, and built Operation Life into a vital community hub.

Her impact reached nationwide through the National Welfare Rights Organization, fighting for income, care, and justice. We are honored to carry her story forward. Rest in power, Ruby. Read our full tribute on our blog.

In rural Kenya, a widow who loses her husband can lose everything else too, including her home, land, belongings.

WMM new release WIDOW CHAMPION (dir. Zippy Kimundu) follows Rodah Nafula, who defied the tradition of widow “inheritance” after being expelled from her family with her three children. After seven years living in a market stall, she reclaimed her land and trained to become a Widow Champion, advocating for other women facing the same fight. The film traces her work alongside other widows navigating a four-year land dispute, and the fragile process of justice brokered by the Luo Council of Elders.

This is a film about women rewriting tradition from within. WIDOW CHAMPION is available to book or purchase through Women Make Movies.

LANDFALL (dir. Cecilia Aldarondo) captures the spirit of a community that refused to be defined by what was done to them. Set in the wake of Hurricane MarĂa, the film follows everyday Puerto Ricans rebuilding not just their homes, but their sense of collective power, even as federal aid stalled and outside investors moved in.

A testament to resilience, LANDFALL is available to book or purchase through Women Make Movies.

Twenty-five years after her uncle Miguel died of AIDS, filmmaker Cecilia Aldarondo went looking for answers and found a family secret that never fully healed.

MEMORIES OF A PENITENT HEART (dir. Cecilia Aldarondo) weaves together home movies, letters, and archival footage with intimate present-day interviews as Aldarondo tracks down her uncle’s estranged partner, who is now a Franciscan monk. This film is an emotional exploration of grief, faith, and the silence that shame leaves behind.

This award-winning documentary is now available to book or purchase through Women Make Movies.
